  • Billy Kidman
  • Mike Rotunda
  • David Finlay
  • Pat Buck
  • Shawn Daivari

  • Sarah Stock

** Drake Maverick, Lio Rush, Lance Storm, Kurt Angle and Rusev all reacted to the news of their release[s] from WWE. Maverick said he is still being allowed to compete in the NXT Cruiserweight Title tournament. You can find an updated list of announced releases here.

** Andrea Listenberger, who was the writer behind the Otis Dozovic and Mandy Rose storyline was also let go from WWE.

** Will Ospreay sat down with Chris Van Vliet for an exclusive interview and among the many topics that were discussed, Ospreay shared that he’ll be a part of New Japan Pro-Wrestling for the next four years, per his contract. Ospreay did state that in 2016, he was contacted for WWE’s Cruiserweight Classic and WWE wanted him to join the company full-time. Ospreay made it clear that he was heading to New Japan and WWE still wanted him to come in and be a part of the tournament.

“Yes I was, but not really to be honest. It was just phone calls. [William] Regal called me while I was filming a commercial for Virgin Trains or something like that and he was just like, ‘Do you fancy doing the Cruiserweight Classic? We have this tournament happening, you gotta be under 205 pounds’ and I was just like, ‘I mean I’m interested but like, I am going to New Japan in April,’ and there was nothing signed, saying that I was legally New Japan’s property at that time. It was just, ‘Yeah, I’m doing this’ and [I] said, ‘Would you have a problem if I did New Japan?’ And Regal just drops the one line where he’s like, ‘Oh, let me ask Triple H and I’ll get right back to you’ and me being a kid, I’m like, ‘What the f*ck is going on?’ So then it was just one of those things where Regal asked Triple H and he was like, ‘Yeah, I’m fine with him doing New Japan. I’m fine with him doing the Super Juniors and then he can come do the Cruiserweight Classic and then he’s free to do what he wants to do.’ But then as it started getting closer to April? Yeah that’s when I debuted, April. There was a call in March and they said that they wanted me full-time and I would have to go over there and be a part of the system and I kinda wasn’t ready for that for me so it was a case of March of 2016, it was a choice [between] WWE, New Japan and TNA and TNA for me, just wasn’t an option at the time. I just didn’t wanna go there, and it was between these two and I talked to my mom and obviously my mom’s like, ‘Well Will, I know WWE. I don’t know what a New Japan is.’ But I know. I know where Finn Balor came from. I know where all these guys had come from and at one point, they did something in New Japan. So in my mind, my best bet is to go there, learn the tricks of the trade and see what happens, and within my first year I was like, ‘This is the place for me. Like this is it,’ and I told Regal, I was like, ‘I’m sorry dude. I’m just not ready to sign’ and he was like, ‘Well do you want to do the Cruiserweight Classic anyway?’ And I [go], ‘I don’t really want to do something unless I’m 100 percent committed to it and I’m just not so I’d rather just go to New Japan,’ and they were completely understanding, and there has been phone calls since but, I’m just not interested. Especially what the current product is. I’m just not interested at all. Until things start to change, I don’t think I’ll ever be interested in going to WWE at all.”

While on the topic of a potential working relationship between AEW and New Japan, Ospreay feels that it won’t happen because of NJPW’s partnership with Ring of Honor and thinks that AEW and New Japan don’t necessarily need each other.

“I don’t know. I think the main reason is we’re kind of in bed with Ring of Honor right now and I think New Japan has a very big loyalty to the guys and once again, people need to remember New Japan at one point we’re going to file for bankruptcy, and they stayed loyal to the guys and they were able to bring it back up and then when Ring of Honor wasn’t doing its best and was on the down, New Japan was one… even there were times where I thought it was questionable maybe. Like I don’t really know, but New Japan have still been like, ‘Oh no. We’ll help out every now and again. We’ll still use some of your guys so like, put them on the show. Hopefully it’ll increase their value a little bit.’ Guys like Jeff Cobb for example. But I don’t know. I just think it’s… the way I always see it is do we really need each other? I think from fans’ perspective, there are a lot of dream matches. We could probably book like a nine-match dream card right now just sitting here, but I think it’s more or less of the — AEW, and I’m saying it like, I love everything [that] AEW’s doing. I think it’s fantastic. It’s fine, it’s doing everything great. New Japan is doing everything great. We don’t really need each other. There’s nothing that can benefit either group. I don’t really know. Maybe we could argue that New Japan on TNT would probably help out a little bit but I just think… there’s something there and for me personally, I want it to happen but I’m not like, ‘Ahh! It must happen.’”

Ospreay and Van Vliet dove into Ospreay’s Twitter back and forth with Seth Rollins from 2019. Ospreay said that according to people that he knows that are close to Seth Rollins, Paul Heyman was the one who told Rollins to apologize for the tweet about making more money than Ospreay.

“I mean, I heard rumors — once again, these are only rumors but I’ve heard rumors that Paul Heyman told him to apologize. Paul Heyman’s a big supporter of mine and once again, Paul Heyman is Paul Heyman. I heard that he told Seth to apologize. I don’t know if that’s true or not but like, there’s kind of rumors going around backstage and I’ve got guys who are friends with Seth Rollins in New Japan who have told me this and I’m like, I don’t know if that’s true but it sounds about right.”

** SLAM! Wrestling journalist Irvin Muchnick gave his thoughts about the Jimmy Snuka/Nancy Argentino edition of Dark Side of the Ring and claims that Evan Husney left out the most important points that he [Muchnick] made during he and Husney’s sit-down interview in Las Vegas in 2019.

“While Dark Side of the Ring left the overriding impression that Snuka did it, and even ambushed two new voices into inadvertently revealing as much, executive producer Evan Husney and crew also left on the cutting-room floor the most important points I had made in our sit-down interview last October in Las Vegas.

But worse than the show itself was their cut-and-paste mash-up of a post-show panel discussion, in which I was pitted with those well-known criminologists and seventh-hand witnesses: Greg “The Hammer” Valentine and Brian “Nasty Boy” Knobbs. There, the VICE team violated their representation to me, prior to our April 3 taping, of a “live to tape” session. Blatantly, shamelessly, they censored almost every single supplementary remark I made. All of them were both accurate and measured.”

** Here is the newest episode of Being The Elite which builds to the Nick Jackson vs. Matt Jackson match on Being The Elite episode 200. This show featured cameo appearances from Marty Scurll and Flip Gordon.

** ESPN has a feature story up on their site and Boxing promoter Bob Arum is the focus of the piece. With the recent news that the state of Florida has deemed WWE an “essential business” so they can continue to run live shows, Arum said he’ll be in contact with WWE about potentially running events at the Performance Center and has discussed the idea with Todd Duboef who’s the president of Top Rank.

“It’s very, very interesting, and we’re going to be in touch with them. There’s a possibility to use their facility to maybe do events without a crowd. We’re very close with Vince [McMahon] and the WWE. So let’s see, but we’re still not talking before June.”

** Spectrum Sports 360 reporter Jon Alba noted on Twitter that the Orange County Sheriff’s Office called the WWE Performance Center over the last few weeks to alert those running the facility that it had to shut down. The executive order issued on April 9th changed that. Orange County called the Performance Center again on April 13th about the live Monday Night RAW show but by the time that took place, WWE was already deemed an essential business. Alba also guest appeared on the Punch-Out podcast on F4WOnline to discuss the news.

** The 4/14/20 episode of WWE Backstage on FS1 was hosted by Renee Young, CM Punk, Christian and Booker T. ** During an interview with CBS Sports, Alexa Bliss shared her thoughts about Ronda Rousey’s comments about professional wrestling during her appearance on Steve-O’s podcast. Rousey was candid about her thoughts about pro wrestling fans and how they are “ungrateful” from her point of view. Bliss had the following to say in response to Ronda’s comments:

“I’ll just start by saying I like Ronda. We’ve always gotten along, I have a lot of respect for her and what she does and what she’s been through. What she does in MMA and UFC, I’ve always been super supportive and everything like that. It was just the use of the word ‘fake.’ Especially because we welcomed Ronda with open arms. We all wanted to see her succeed, and whenever we would have a match, we would respect her UFC background and respect how she did certain things. We wanted to make an amazing story with amazing matches while meshing both styles of WWE and UFC together. I thought every girl that worked with her did an amazing job of that. But, with that, we had a whole documentary based on my concussions and how I didn’t know if I was ever going to be medically cleared. The thing is, you know, you’re only as good as the person you’re in the ring with. When you kind of bash the fans who were always really supportive and say what we do is fake, it’s kind of disrespectful when we were so respectful of what she did coming in and we were respectful of her in WWE. Everyone was willing to help her succeed, you know? She did a lot for us, but we also did a lot for her. A lot of bodies laid on the path she walked on. So, to say what we do is fake is really unfair. Yes, the finish is scripted, we say that; it’s protagonist, antagonist and conflict resolution. It’s a story we’re telling. My whole thing is… if she comes back to WWE? Great. We would all love to work with her again, I’m sure. Just limit the use of the F-word.”

** Yahoo! News pushed out their chat with The Big Show. During the conversation, Big Show spoke about WWE being deemed an “essential business” and he also spoke about the safety precautions that were taken when he arrived to the Performance Center for his match against WWE Champion Drew McIntyre.

While speaking about the Junior Heavyweight division, El Desperado opened up about Hiromu Takahashi’s severe neck injury that he suffered during the Summer of 2018. Desperado said he could not believe what he saw and also couldn’t believe that Hiromu was able to power through that match and finish it out with Dragon Lee.

“I watched the match back on NJPW World and just let out this gasp when I saw it. For him to then finish the match and win with the Time Bomb… I saw something where he was talking about how he thought this was his last match so he forced himself through to the end. It was amazing that he finished that match, but I wanted to say to him that he can’t decide he’s retiring that easily!”

** Mike Johnson of PWInsider conducted an interview with Imperium’s Fabian Aichner. Aichner had high praise for the NXT UK brand and stated that he believes the brand has potential to be bigger than the NXT brand based in the United States.

“I think, like you said with the Cruiserweight Classic, NXT UK, I think it’s a great platform for talent in the UK to show their skills. Right now on television with BT Sport, and I think it’s just a matter of getting more eyeballs on the product. Obviously it was the same at NXT. You have to start somewhere, right? So NXT UK is in progress right now. It’s getting bigger every single time an episode airs. We’ll get more eyeballs on the product, which is exactly what we want, and I think, I really do believe that NXT UK has the potential to become as big, if not bigger than the current NXT right now. But it just takes time. It doesn’t happen… Rome wasn’t built in a day. So, same as with a NXT in the US. It just takes a little bit [of/more] time. But everybody over there has a crazy working spirit. Everybody’s sticking together and Imperium is over there, and I think we’re doing a pretty good job of getting more eyeballs on the product and we’re going to keep rocking and rolling until we get there.”

** The 2010 TNA Lockdown pay-per-view was covered by Eric Bischoff and Conrad Thompson on the latest 83 Weeks podcast. Bischoff shared his thoughts about the six-sided ring and what he thought of it when he first came into the company. Bischoff stated that the idea behind keeping the ring at the time was to attract viewers who were surfing through channels, hoping that the six-sided ring caught their eye.

“Because it was f*cking stupid… it was stupid. Here was the logic that I heard and I’m not gonna name names, alright? But here’s the logic that I heard: ‘Yeah! But when people are flipping through the channels, they’re gonna see that six-sided ring and stop and go, ‘Hey, what’s that? Maybe we should watch it.’ That was the entire psychology and strategy behind the six-sided ring. You’re hoping to build an audience because people are clicking — first of all, people don’t click through channels anymore. You punch in your number, you scroll up and down. I mean, even in 2010, it was an absurd rationale and psychology if you will, or strategy to come up with a six-sided ring for no other reason than to capture an audience that may be surfing channels or as it was put, clicking through channels and stop because they were going to see something that looked odd to them. Think about that. That’s pretty f*cking stupid, right?”

Bischoff spoke about TNA co-founder Jeff Jarrett. Jarrett is currently a backstage producer for WWE and Bischoff believes Jarrett could go down as one of the best producers in the sports-entertainment company.

“Jeff Jarrett, whenever Jeff’s name comes up as it relates to him being a talent, I have one opinion. In terms of him as an agent/producer, I have an entirely different opinion. I think Jeff is probably underrated as a producer. I don’t think he’s reached his potential as a producer. He’ll get better every single day and he’ll get more comfortable every single day. People will start listening to him in a different way every single day, and I think Jeff Jarrett could go down as one of the better producers in WWE at some point, if he’s not already.”

** Next week’s episode of Dark Side of the Ring on VICE will focus in on the assassination of Dino Bravo and below is the trailer for the forthcoming episode:

** Forbes published their interview with Jim Ross and Ross explained how essential remaining a fan of wrestling is while maintaining his job as a broadcaster.

“Being a fan is a box that must be checked. I’d venture to say that when Keith Jackson was calling college football, he loved college football. When John Madden was calling NFL football, he loved the game. It’s easy to tell that by the passion and zest in their voices. You knew they weren’t jesting you and that’s extremely important. On that night in Toronto at WrestleMania 18, Jerry Lawler and I had the best seats in the house for the broadcast. But every now and then I had the propensity to take my eyes off the monitor and look up. Sometimes you do that and you lock eyes with a fan having the night of their life. Those things, to a legitimate wrestling fan, remind me how much fun it is to be a fan and how much fun it is to be at a live event enjoying what these guys do. That moment made me proud to be in the business. Hogan had more matches behind him than ahead of him – the crowd knew it – and it was like a reunion of a favorite classic rock band, and then you had the new kid on the block in Dwayne Johnson, and we all knew he’d be special. It all encapsulated why I was there. What I saw that night, as far as a performance was concerned, was nothing short of extraordinary. It reminded me, in an emotional way as I was surrounded by 70,000 people, that I was narrating their story. It all reminded me why I was doing what I was doing and where being a fan led me.”

** Jim Varsallone of the Miami Herald chatted with Fabian Aichner to promote his forthcoming match against Finn Balor on NXT.

** Christian joined Booker T and Brad Gilmore on the Hall Of Fame podcast and during the Q&A portion of the show, Christian was asked if Edge’s WWE 24 documentary made him consider a return to the ring. Christian was clear about his concussion issues in the past and added that he’s medically disqualified and doesn’t know how he’d even go about getting cleared.

“I mean, it’s one of those things, right? It’s a completely different injury. You know, I’m pretty content with all that I’ve accomplished in WWE. I pretty much accomplished everything I wanted to do except main event WrestleMania and let’s be honest, how many people actually get a chance to do that? I’m 46 years old, and I had some concussion issues. It’s just a matter of… I don’t see it happening. I’m medically disqualified. I’m just not sure how I would ever get cleared.”

** Robbie Eagles joined Chris Charlton on the NJPW Official English Podcast. Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, Eagles was searching for his spot in New Japan Pro-Wrestling after his tag team partner Will Ospreay made the jump to the heavyweight division. Although they are now in two different divisions, Eagles thinks that fans have not seen the last of the Birds Of Prey.

“Yeah, it came as a bit of shock to me as well when he announced his move but I think everyone sort of saw the writing on the wall with that and I know Will was working towards that even when we did start the Birds Of Prey. So it’s something that I’ve been preparing for. I don’t think you’re gonna see the Birds Of Prey end. It’s just gonna be a less frequent thing because of him being in a different division. To me, the match-ups aren’t gonna align like they used to. So, it’s definitely something that will still happen. Maybe it happens more often than not outside of New Japan Pro-Wrestling. I’m not too sure how that looks at the moment, but the Birds Of Prey are definitely not done. There’s too many matches that we personally wanna have against other tag teams, so I know any opportunity Will and I get to step in as partners again, we’re gonna make that happen as much as possible, and I think people didn’t even really see the peak of us as a tag team yet so, we’ve got a lot more tricks in our back pockets. So yeah, I definitely think there’s more room for the Birds Of Prey tag team.”

** NWA Vice President David Lagana spoke with Muscle Man Malcolm for an exclusive interview. While conversing about empty arena shows, Lagana stated that the NWA will not be running any empty arena shows and explained he and Billy Corgan’s thinking behind that decision.

“I think we’re trying to follow the way of the world and you know, for us it’s gotta be the safety of not only our talents and our staff but also our fans because if you’ve watched NWA Powerrr, a large amount of that show is based around the live audience and so to do a show without our audience, in that format, in the Powerrr format, it just doesn’t work so, I don’t think we’ll be doing Powerrr until we can have an audience because I think it changes that. Now that doesn’t mean we’re not gonna be producing content. It just means we won’t be doing the Powerrr show in its current incarnation that way.”

Lagana reflected on his time as a creative writer in WWE. When asked for one of his favorite storylines that he played a role in putting together, he specifically mentioned the build to Eddie Guerrero winning the WWE Championship from Brock Lesnar at the 2004 No Way Out pay-per-view. When it came to putting the title on Eddie, Lagana said the thought process behind it was to put the title on Eddie in a pro-Hispanic town/city.

“I think my favorite moment to go from pitch to end, and even when we pitched the match, he wasn’t supposed to win but the Eddie Guerrero winning the title. So, because Eddie started to get real hot and Eddie was very interesting, a very interesting personality to produce because he had… the character you saw on television was very much how he was in person so he always wanted everything to be the best. He was very — I don’t wanna say moody but he wanted it to be great and so, we had done the run. The ratings had started to do good and ultimately, whatever happened with Vince and Brock started to kind of — they decided to go with Eddie and that reaction that night, it’s still one of the coolest. When you see the people react like that, that’s just something — we had three weeks of build. I remember the pitch was, ‘Let’s do it in his hometown. Let’s see if there’s a Futbol stadium or something,’ and they researched all these pro-Hispanic towns and San Francisco — they said, ‘We’re gonna do it in San Francisco’ and I was like, I just didn’t know and then they showed me the demographics and where the Cow Palace was and you know, it’s still one of my favorite memories because everyone kind of points to the end of WrestleMania 20 and obviously what’s happened since but, that was Eddie’s moment…”

Another member of WWE creative during that time was Brian Gewirtz. Lagana spoke highly of Gewirtz and said that he wouldn’t have become the writer he is now if it wasn’t for Brian.

“I wouldn’t be half the writer I am if it wasn’t for Brian, because he knew how to take concepts and really blow them out in a way that people — well like, I would come up with the lie detector test with Vince [McMahon] and Mr. America and he executed it and he made it one of my favorite segments ever and I think that’s really — it’s funny. We used to butt heads a lot because they made us be competitive but like, I really appreciate all the work he did to really help both shows at the time.”

** Mickie James appeared on 8 News Now to promote National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

** Chris Jericho announced that he’ll be co-hosting the season premiere of the series, “The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs”.

** While chatting with SuperSport, the new Universal Champion Braun Strowman shared the details of where we was when he received the call from WWE about needing him to fill Roman Reigns’ spot in the Universal Championship match at WrestleMania 36.

“I have some land up in Wisconsin. I have 80 acres out in the middle of nowhere. I think there are 400 people in the whole town. I thought, ‘If I’m going to be on lock down, I’d rather it was out in the middle of nowhere’ so I loaded up my things in my car and drove 21 hours to Wisconsin. I got one hour away from my property in Wisconsin and I got a phone call from the Chairman of WWE saying there has been some last-minute changes… ‘we need you; we’re sending a jet, it lands at 9 PM.’ So, I made it to Wisconsin long enough to grab a quick bite of dinner… and headed to the regional county airport and jumped on a four-seater jet. It reminded [me] that you have to be on 24-hours a day because you never know. Kudos to our team for making it happen and getting me back to Florida, then returned back in a 24-hour period with minimal contact with other human beings. Kudos to the company for getting me down there and making it happen.”

** WWE has added new matches to the on-going AJ Styles ‘Best Of’ series on the WWE Network.

** Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated conducted an interview with Fabian Aichner and he dove into he and Marcel Barthel’s friendship and how they developed that real-life friendship.

“We started the same day in WWE, but we’d never met before that. We’d worked for a lot of the same promotions in Germany and England, but we somehow never ran into each other. The night before we started at WWE, he sent me an email saying there was a rental car booked for both of us. I picked him up, and I remember it vividly. I believe everything happens for a reason. When I pulled up to the hotel, I thought to myself, ‘There’s got to be a reason this guy is coming into my life right now.’ So we drove to the Performance Center and we were best buds by the time we got there. We trained together in the Performance Center, and when we finally had a match, the chemistry in the ring clicked. We found even more respect for each other too. To form a tag team was the next logical step, and its been a natural fit. The chemistry on-screen is undeniable, and it’s a perfect fit with WALTER and Alexander Wolfe.”

** Enteprenuer.com chatted with MLW CEO Court Bauer. Bauer revealed that there have been offers to have MLW wrestlers compete in the desert in singles matches while the pandemic is going on.

“We’ve been straightforward with our message to them: Health comes first. Health comes second. Health comes third, and we have responsibilities to their families and to them to be prudent during a time when there’s so much uncertainty. We’ve had guys who have literally offered to do matches in the desert, one-on-one with a referee, and go through testing. We’ve had guys who just say, ‘However we can spread the word during this time and stay active and promote on social media.’ Obviously, we’ve turned down the matches in the desert. [Laughs] I’m not interested in putting anyone at risk. There are so many steps to take to ensure the health of everyone. What’s the risk versus the reward?”
