Drake Maverick loses NXT Cruiserweight Title tourney final, Triple H offers him new contract

Although he fell short in the finals of the NXT Cruiserweight Championship tournament, Drake Maverick was met by Paul Levesque with a new WWE contract.

The finals of the interim NXT Cruiserweight Championship tournament took place on tonight’s episode of NXT on the USA Network. Maverick faced El Hijo del Fantasma in the finals and fell short in the match after the “kidnappers” that have been appearing on NXT over the past several months interfered. They did not get the chance to react to del Fantasma as Maverick hit a suicide dive to the outside. After Maverick fought them off, he got back in the ring and was hit with Fantasma’s finishing maneuver to close out the NXT Cruiserweight Title tourney.

After the match, Drake Maverick, who was a part of the mass WWE releases/furloughs in April, received a round of applause from the NXT talents in the crowd. As Maverick made his way up the entrance ramp, he was met by Paul Levesque who had a WWE contract in his hand and Maverick signed on the spot.

El Hijo del Fantasma is the interim NXT Cruiserweight Champion and the current champion is Jordan Devlin who is currently in Ireland. Devlin last wrestled on NXT on USA this past February when he defeated Lio Rush to retain the title. Devlin has not been able to get into the United States due to the travel ban via the COVID-19 pandemic.
