WRESTLING NEWS

**AEW Dynamite takes place from the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania tonight at 8 p.m. ET on TNT and TSN 2 in Canada. It is the first of two shows from Pittsburgh this week with the premiere of Rampage this Friday night at 10. The show has been riding a big wave of momentum topping one million viewers for four consecutive weeks and hitting some of its highest 18-49 numbers in the show’s existence with a 0.46 last week (it’s third-highest ever). Below are the announced matches and segments:
*Fourth Labour of Jericho: Chris Jericho vs. Wardlow w/ MJF at ringside
*IMPACT Tag Team Championship: Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows (champions) vs. Evil Uno & Stu Grayson
*Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks vs. Dante Martin, Matt & Mike Sydal
*Darby Allin vs. Daniel Garcia
*Matt Hardy & Private Party vs. Orange Cassidy, Chuck Taylor & Wheeler Yuta
*Nyla Rose vs. Kris Statlander

**On Busted Open Radio, Tony Khan said that Dan Lambert’s return to Dynamite is being pushed a week and won’t be on tonight’s program. Khan stated he will be on the show next Wednesday in Houston and is bringing “two great UFC champions”.

**CM Punk was a guest on Sunday Night’s Main Event to promote his role on the upcoming series ‘Heels’ that premieres this Sunday. When asked about “The First Dance” at The United Center on August 20th, Punk had fun with the question noting there might be a screening for episode three of the series that same night at an AMC in Chicago, but the schedule “isn’t confirmed yet”. The promotion around this event has been very good where AEW and now Punk have used the reports and speculation to fuel the anticipation and giving the audience as much of a clear sign of what to expect and then, delivering on what they want.

**Dave Meltzer reported that among last week’s cable programming, WWE Raw was the #2 program overall in the 18-49 demographic trailing 90 Day Fiance. AEW Dynamite was #4 for the entire week. The August 2nd edition of Raw averaged 657,000 viewers in 18-49 and the AEW Homecoming episode averaged 593,000. This wouldn’t include Friday Night SmackDown, which is a network program and averaged 792,000 for this past week’s show.

**Lance Storm (Lance Evers) was a guest on Talk is Jericho and did a match critique of Jericho’s match against Juventud Guerrera from SuperBrawl VIII in February 1998 at the Cow Palace where Jericho unmasked Guerrera. Prior to the match review, Lance spoke about his release from WWE during the pandemic in 2020 and noting that he did receive a phone call rather than the standard email notification that other producers received:

I think for the most part (they) almost let go of all of the producers that weren’t based in Florida who could still work. [I think] there were ten of us that were let go at the same time. The fact that there was no possible way for me to come to work, like, I had actually told them I couldn’t cross the border before they told everyone to stay home and I sort of think that was just the way it was. The guys based in Florida could still show up and run the shows at the PC (Performance Center), but there is no way Lance is going to be back in the country anytime soon.

Although I was happy and I have no idea why but the vast majority of them got emails. I actually got a phone call, so I felt special. There was the big town hall virtual thing that we were all told we could tune into and Vince said, ‘cost cutting’ and ‘everything with the pandemic’ and that ‘many of you will be receiving an email after this call’, it’s like, ‘oh no’. I never got one and it was the next day I got a call from Johnny (John Laurinaitis), which I appreciated him actually doing it in-person, so to speak, with a phone call just (saying) that I’m one of the ones getting cut. Because my contract was a little different because of the visa requirements to bring me in from another country, I luckily had the 90-day clause of getting 90-days’ notice, so I got paid for another three months which was a bonus, so that was kind of nice. Again, certainly, no hard feelings, you know, stuff happens.

During the interview, Lance spoke about the success he has found in providing online match reviews & breakdowns for wrestlers. It was an idea suggested to him by ESPN’s Arda Ocal (the former Kyle Edwards in WWE and co-host of Aftermath in Canada) where he provides detailed notes on a match and then does a one-hour Zoom discussion with the wrestler.

**Tuesday’s episode of NXT in Canada aired at Midnight ET on Sportsnet 360 due to tennis coverage. The show did stream live at 8 p.m. on the Sportsnet Now streaming service for Canadians. Due to the late airing and probably very few being aware ahead of time, the show only averaged 13,000 viewers in Canada from Midnight-2 a.m. ET.

**Peggy Lathan, who was a popular fixture of the Mid-Atlantic Fan Fests and on the Mid-Atlantic Gateway website, has died at the age of 69. Thomas Simpson announced the news of Lathan’s passing after she had come home to quarantine after contracting COVID-19 even though she was vaccinated. Greg Oliver at SLAM has a story on Lathan, whose passing hit a lot of people hard on Tuesday. The Mid-Atlantic Gateway site has compiled his writings including articles she wrote on Don Kernodle, Ole Anderson, Ric Flair, Ronnie Garvin, and others. Sadly, her father is hospitalized with COVID-19 and had also been vaccinated, according to the SLAM story.

**In an interview with SI.com, Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson stated he will be going to Las Vegas to attend SummerSlam next weekend. In the article, it stated that Steveson’s older brother Bobby will be reporting to the WWE Performance Center next week. Gable has been on WWE’s radar for some time and he has been making teases online over the past week by tweeting Dana White and Vince McMahon:

If I ever go to WWE, I’d be a ‘Paul Heyman Guy. Heyman is a legend. We’d be two people doing great things, and that would be a tough team to beat. And I’ve known Brock since I was in high school. He’s been there for me for a long time, making sure I do things the right way and put my best foot forward.

**Due to technical issues, Tuesday’s edition of NWA Power did not stream on Fite TV. The sides each issued statements apologizing for the problems and the episode will air tonight at 6:05 p.m. ET with the following scheduled:
*Champions Series: Mims vs. Jax Dane
*Champions Series: Thom Latimer vs. Trevor Murdoch
*Champions Series: Colby Corino vs. Sal Rinauro
*Special Exhibition: Nick Aldis and Chris Adonis

**Josh Woods will challenge for the ROH Pure Championship at Death Before Dishonor on September 12th. Woods will be facing the winner of the match between Jonathan Gresham and Rhett Titus at Glory by Honor next weekend in Philadelphia. The location of the September pay-per-view was just moved from Lakeland, Florida to Philadelphia with the promotion citing concerns over the spike in COVID-19 cases.

**The promotion has also added a tag match to the first night of Glory by Honor on Friday, August 20th with Angelina Love & Mandy Leon vs. Vita VonStarr & TBA.

**NJPW has announced that the stipulation options for the KOPW 2021 match between Toru Yano and Chase Owens next month. The two are set to meet on September 4th on the first night at the MetLife Dome where fans can choose either an “I Quit” Match or a Texas Death Match. The online poll will run for six days beginning on Thursday.

**TripleMania is this Saturday night, which is typically AAA’s most popular event of the year. This year, the promotion is not able to stream the show outside of Mexico and is likely to cause a lot of anger when people realize this on Saturday night. Luchablog has stated that they will be streaming the show on its own personal Twitch channel. The card is headlined by Kenny Omega defending the AAA Mega Heavyweight Championship against Andrade El Idolo and a Mask vs. Hair Match between Psycho Clown and Rey Escorpion.

**Eric Bischoff spoke on his podcast 83 Weeks on why he doesn’t receive royalties connected to the N.W.O. and what the trade-off was in WCW as an employee compared to talent.

**Fite TV is carrying this Sunday’s Pro Wrestling NOAH card from Kawasaki at 3 a.m. ET. The Sunday morning card is headlined by Takashi Sugiura vs. Masato Tanaka for the GHC National title along with GHC Champion Naomichi Marufuji & The Great Muta against HAYATA & Yoshinari Ogawa. The card will also be available on Wrestle Universe.

**Amy Nemmity of Wrestle Joy interviewed Brandi Rhodes on the recent birth of her and Cody’s first child and the process of going into labor while also filming “Rhodes to the Top”, the anniversary of AEW Heels, and whether to expect her back on television anytime soon:

You know, there are a lot of things to consider. On one hand, you have Red Velvet, who has this amazing title match coming up. She’s obviously a good friend of mine, and I’ve been calling her my partner for a long time. She got ambushed, and no one came out to help her. I wanted to reach out on Twitter, because I was thinking, ‘gosh, no one came to help Red out there, maybe I need to be around more’. She has this incredible opportunity, she’s put in the work, and I think she’d make an incredible champion. But, I don’t know if that will happen if she doesn’t have help. So I’ll just leave it at that.

**SI.com has a story on Masked Republic securing a P-3 group visa for 49 luchadores and Japanese wrestlers that will assist their ability to work shows in the United States. The list includes Great Sasuke, Ultimo Dragon, and Yoshihiro Tajiri and Mexican stars Psycho Clown, LA Park, Aero Star, and many more. From the SI article:

Per the visa, the talent is only allowed to work for the Expo Lucha, but that also allows them to be highlighted in an array of promotions in the United States. Permitting the promotion works with Masked Republic, potential for working relationships exists with AEW, MLW, Impact and Ring of Honor, as well as across the indies.

**Natalia Class (formerly Salina de la Renta in MLW) announced that she has been accepted into Full Sail University for the Entertainment Business Bachelor of Science Degree program. Class will begin classes next month at the university.

**The WWE stock closed at $50.68 on Wednesday.

**Kay Lee Ray turns 29 years old today.

In a press release, it was revealed that Spence Jr. suffered a torn left retina while the card will move ahead with Yordenis Ugas replacing Spence Jr. The fight is taking place from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on the same night as SummerSlam in the city with the idea that WWE will end its show in time for fans to catch the Pacquiao fight.

**The UFC has confirmed its return to Abu Dhabi with UFC 267 set for Saturday, October 30th. While it’s a numbered event, it will not be airing on pay-per-view with broadcast plans not yet announced.
