John Cena and WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns closed the SummerSlam go-home edition of Friday Night SmackDown in Phoenix. Reigns proposed the stipulation that if he loses the Universal Title at SummerSlam, he will step away from WWE.

Both Seth Rollins and Edge had their respective promo segments to promote their match at SummerSlam. During Rollins’ promo, Edge appeared on the titantron after ‘The Brood’ theme song hit over the arena. Rollins was then given a ‘Brood Bath’ courtesy of Edge.

Rick Boogs competed in his first TV match on SmackDown. He teamed with the reigning Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura. They defeated Apollo Crews and Commander Azeez. Boogs pinned Crews for the victory. It was Boogs’ first win in WWE since March of 2020.

Earlier in the show, Rey Mysterio took on Jey Uso. Dominik tried to assist Rey to victory but was caught by the referee. This led to Rey losing the match ahead of he and Dominik challenging for the SmackDown Tag Titles at SummerSlam.
