Tony Khan would not mention CM Punk by name until he arrived in AEW.
It has been several months since CM Punk made his return to pro wrestling when he debuted for AEW on their Rampage show in Chicago, Illinois. Punk is 5-0 thus far in AEW and he is scheduled to appear on the 11/5 Rampage where he’ll confront Eddie Kingston.
A CM Punk-related story was shared by Tony Schiavone on the latest AEW Unrestricted podcast. Schiavone discussed how Tony Khan likes to keep things protected until they play out on-screen. One of those occasions was the day before CM Punk arrived in AEW and Khan would not mention Punk by name and referred to the person coming in as a “special guest”. Schiavone said Khan quickly corrected someone on the call when they mentioned CM Punk by name.
Tony [Khan] does that. I mean he really tries to kayfabe. Just [to] give you an example, going back to CM Punk, we had the meeting, our phone meeting about the whole format and he kept saying ‘special guest’ and one of our production people said, ‘So when Punk has the entrance,’ he went, ‘Woah, wait a minute. Woah, hold on a second. Who said anything about –’ it was just like the day before so…
That conversation derived from Tony Schiavone not knowing Bobby Fish would be challenging Sammy Guevara for the TNT Title until Guevara said it live on air.
To be honest, I didn’t know you [Bobby Fish] were coming until I did the interview with Sammy Guevara on Rhodes to the Top after he had won the match and he mentioned your name and he mentioned the tweet. That’s the first time I’d heard you were coming in. I try to stay under the radar on rumors, you know?
Guevara is scheduled to be a part of The Inner Circle versus American Top Team/Men of the Year tag match at AEW Full Gear. To hear POST Wrestling’s recap of the 11/3 Dynamite on TNT, head over to this link.
