Dream Slam Weekly (Vol. 12) Unagi Sayaka Wins in GanbarePro; KAIRI & Nanae Takahashi Announced for Five Star GP Opening Weekend

By: Karen Peterson

There are many wonderful and exciting things happening this summer, but before I get to any of those, I wanted to extend my sincerest condolences to Himeka and her family on the unexpected passing of her father. He passed away suddenly on the 11th, and she later issued a statement via Twitter and TokyoSports made a formal announcement. She’s been removed from the Hokkaido tour (7/14-18) so she may take care of family affairs.

“I kept the fact that I am a wrestler from him, I would have loved for him to see me in my costume just once, but now it’s too late.” – Himeka

She is scheduled for the Stardom in Showcase show on 7/23 in a 3-way tag with Maika (see below) and will still compete in the Five Star Grand Prix at this time.

Don’t be afraid to tell those in your life how much they mean to you or express things you are holding back on. Be kind to one another.

She’s wearing a synthetic chest with muscular arms and in her usual fashion, DIY gear with markers and underwear. https://twitter.com/Takesoup/status/1547635075574927361?s=20&t=6mMT3Sf2VMH-h0j-zcZEzQ

Weekly Match Selection

Last weekend, Tokyo Joshi Pro-Wrestling had their second big event of the year, Summer Sun Princess. While the match was non-title, it was released for free on AEW’s YouTube page as part of Dark (Ep 152) as an AEW Women’s World Championship Eliminator Match. By far one of the top matches on the card, not just in notoriety and star power, but also if you’re into top-tier technical wrestling and power fighters. Personally, this was one of my favorite matches on the card.

I did love seeing the AEW Women’s World Championship IN Japan, but I still wish it could have been defended ON Summer Sun Princess IN Japan, especially as it placed higher on the card than Maki Itoh’s International Princess Championship defense against debuting in Japan (Minus Luggage, but Did the Damn Thing Anyway), Alex Windsor from the UK. If a Special Singles’ Match is to outrank a company title match, it should have been a Shibata-esque, “I’m flipping the script and making this a title match” last-minute change, not an opportunity for an opportunity when Yamashita was on AEW several weeks ago.

I am sure that AEW wanted to keep that a little bit a secret, but I feel like they could have helped drive more international fans to “our partners Tokyo Joshi Pro in Japan” (per Excalibur on commentary). While it is great that they made this match available for free to their fans, there were plenty of other AEW talents featured on Summer Sun Princess like Hikaru Shida and Riho and notable TJPW/Japan independent scene regulars like Ryo Mizunami, Yuka Sakazaki, Mei Suruga, and Maki Itoh. While I am always happy seeing the promotions work together, I also feel like AEW should be doing a little bit more to promote the other companies they are partnering with in particular (like TJPW and DDT, where Konosuke Takeshita hails from).

  • Promotion: Tokyo Joshi Pro-Wrestling x All Elite Wrestling
  • Event Name: Summer Sun Princess 2022
  • Show Date: (July 9, 2022)
  • Competitors: Thunder Rosa (AEW Women’s World Champion) vs. Miyu Yamashita
  • Venue: Ota Ward Gymnasium, Tokyo, Japan

Thanks for reading! Have a great week!
