WWE’s next visit to Saudi Arabia will take place in May for a ‘King and Queen of the Ring’ PLE.
That is according to a report by Mike Johnson of PWInsider. The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 27th, a date first reported by Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics.
Johnson reported that the working plan was for the event to take place in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. He later issued an update that the event will take place in Jeddah.
The last time a King of the Ring tournament was held was in 2021. Qualifying matches took place on Raw and SmackDown, with the tournament finals on October 21st at the Crown Jewel PLE in Riyadh.
At that event, Xavier Woods defeated Finn Balor to become King of the Ring, while Zelina Vega won the title of Queen of the Ring by beating Doudrop.
The female competition was known as the Queen’s Crown Tournament in 2021.
The King of the Ring concept began in 1985, with Don Muraco as the inaugural winner.
It was confined to non-televised house shows until the mid-1990s, when it lent its name to pay-per-views on an annual basis.
In the 2000s, the gimmick was periodically dropped and revived, with its longest absence being between 2010 and 2015.
