When it comes to a match with Roman Reigns, Sheamus says it was ‘heading that way’.
Closing out the 2022 WWE Survivor Series Premium Live Event was the men’s WarGames match. The Bloodline (Roman Reigns, Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso, Solo Sikoa) and now former member Sami Zayn took on Kevin Owens, Drew McIntyre and The Brawling Brutes (Sheamus, Butch & Ridge Holland).
Sheamus was asked for his thoughts about the match during a sit-down interview with Ryan Satin for the Out of Character podcast.
He enjoyed being part of it but thought it could have been better. Sheamus clarified that there’s no criticism from him about the match but it’s not something he’s going to write home about. He feels The Brawling Brutes were just there as opponents as far as the story went. When the idea of facing Roman Reigns around that time was brought up, Sheamus said it was ‘heading that way’ and then things changed.
Yeah, yeah, it was cool, it was cool (being part of Survivor Series: WarGames). You know, I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I thought it was alright, I thought it could have been better. It’s a different type of match and I think the fact that people don’t get eliminated until everybody gets in but, it was alright. Yeah, I had fun, it was grand. It was another experience for me. I’ve done a lot in this business. It was another type of match I’ve never been in. So it was cool. In that respect, it was cool.
I don’t have any criticisms about it. I just thought it was… I thought it was alright. If I go back through my career, it’s not something I go, oh! That moment there, that WarGames match. That wouldn’t be up there anywhere near my top five or ten, you know? I’ve had some great matches, Hell in a Cell, I really like the one I had against Randy (Orton). Money in the Bank matches, Cage matches, the one with John (Cena) at Money in the Bank years ago… I just felt at the time, the story was — we (Brawling Brutes) were there as the opponents. The stories hadn’t really heated up to that point so it was going a different direction which is just the way it is sometimes with storylines. But as I said, it was cool to go in there and be involved in a match like that but, it’s not something I’m gonna look back on my career and go, yeah man! That first WarGames match I was in was on the main roster, yeah! I don’t think so.
It was heading that way and then things changed (Sheamus said about a match with Roman Reigns). Things change all the time so, creative stuff happens and it was heading in that direction and you know, it just took a U-turn.
He then went on to speak highly of Butch and Ridge Holland. Sheamus wishes they would get more opportunities and explained why he feels Holland has not gotten a fair shake yet.
I love those lads (Butch & Ridge Holland). I just wish they get more opportunities, you know what I mean? I think Butch is great, he’s had an amazing career. Obviously, he’s studied this business since he was 12. He’s got great ideas and I think he’s years beyond where he should be. Ridge is awesome too. One of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. The thing about Ridge is that I don’t think he’s got his fair whack. Obviously, stuff happened just over a year ago but, I don’t think that was anyone’s fault. That’s not his fault and I think that I just feel, I believe that he needs a fair crack. He comes from a rugby background, he’s strong, he’s powerful and he just needs a proper opportunity.
At WrestleMania 39 night two, Sheamus was part of the Intercontinental Championship three way involving Drew McIntyre and GUNTHER, who retained the title.
