John Hennigan was surprised to see the merger between WWE and UFC and is glad there is an alternative for professional wrestlers.
Hennigan appeared on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani on Wednesday following his professional boxing debut at Creator Clash 2 this past weekend.
Hennigan spoke about his surprise regarding the news of the merger earlier this month, and what he expects will happen to the talents involved:
I think they’re going to let a bunch of guys go. I think salaries are going to get cut. I’m really glad AEW is around to balance that out a little bit because if they weren’t, there would be just no leverage, nowhere else to go and WWE & UFC would be this weird monopoly that wrings the money out of the livelihoods of the fighters and wrestlers and I just think that sucks.
Hennigan first entered WWE in 2003 after winning a contract on the third season of Tough Enough and reported to Ohio Valley Wrestling. He worked for WWE until the end of 2011 when he left and continued his career outside the promotion.
In 2019, Hennigan returned to WWE and was paired with The Miz, which included a match at WrestleMania 37 against Damian Priest & Bad Bunny.
Hennigan was released by WWE in November 2021 and has continued wrestling for AAA and MLW, and appeared on several episodes of AEW Dynamite last year.
At Creator Clash 2, Hennigan defeated Harley Morenstein by TKO in the fifth round of their fight.
