Multiple UFC nominees listed for ESPN’s ESPY Awards

There are multiple UFC nominations on the list for the annual ESPY Awards from ESPN.

The awards will be handed out live on ABC on Wednesday, July 12 in Los Angeles and multiple UFC fighters are among those listed as nominees.

Leon Edwards’ improbable come-from-behind knockout of Kamaru Usman at UFC 278 last August is among the nominees for ‘Best Championship Performance’ along with Nikola Jokic’s performance in this year’s NBA Finals, Lionel Messi in the World Cup last year, and Rose Zhang of the LPGA winning her first pro start.

Edwards was down on all the scorecards going into the fifth round with Usman when he stopped the welterweight champion with a head kick and was most people’s choice for Knockout of the Year given the stakes and the story of the fight.

Jon Jones is nominated for ‘Best Comeback Athlete’ after stopping Ciryl Gane in the first round of their heavyweight fight at UFC 285 this past March to win the vacant heavyweight title.

It was Jones’ first fight since February 2020 and first in the heavyweight division.

The award for ‘Best UFC Fighter’ includes nominees Leon Edwards, Jon Jones, Islam Makhachev, and Amanda Nunes.

The winners are chosen from online fan voting.

The full list of nominees can be found on the ESPN website.
