An injury to Rey Mysterio led to the abrupt ending of his match with Santos Escobar on Friday Night SmackDown.

During the final match of the U.S. Title Invitational, Escobar executed a tope suicida to Mysterio and sent Mysterio down where his head crashed on the floor as they went to a commercial break. When they returned, Mysterio was being checked on and the match was called off with Escobar declared the winner.

POST Wrestling was informed by a WWE source that this was not the planned finish but Escobar was scheduled to win the match. A backstage segment involving the two was also scrapped for later in the program with Fightful and PW Torch confirming those details.

It is not known if Mysterio suffered a concussion, but WWE stated on the broadcast they would provide an update on its social channels this weekend.

Escobar was declared the winner and will challenge Austin Theory for the United States Championship on the August 11 edition of SmackDown in Calgary, Alberta.
