Promoted as the “First Ever All-Japanese Joshi Wrestling Company in the United States Brings Japan’s Top Female Wrestlers to a Global Audience,” Sukeban is a nostalgic throwback concept, specifically harking to the 70s and 80s era of girl gangs and joshi wrestling. With an old-school wrestling anime-inspired trailer and punk rock soundtrack, the show sold out in less than two hours amidst a flurry of questions and very little information.

An obscene amount of praise must be heaped upon the costuming and design team behind Sukeban because with minimalist yet mysterious promotion, the studding visuals and costuming of the entire roster have kept heads turning and mouths moving for weeks since the animated trailer by Sakana Koji and Silas Hickey dropped on September first.

The stunning costumes were designed by Olympia Le-Tan with gorgeous hats by milliner Stephen Jones and exquisite nail art by Mei Kawajiri. The retro-inspired promotional photos by Chikashi Suzuki also perfectly captured an era that predates many current wrestling fans, too. The championship belt was designed by Marc Newson and revealed at the New York City World Premiere.
