Bill Apter catches up with Jerry Lawler.
In early February, Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler underwent surgery at a Florida hospital after suffering a stroke. Lawler has been recovering and over the summer, he appeared in front of the live crowd when Monday Night Raw was in Memphis, Tennessee. Weeks later, Lawler made an appearance at a convention.
Sportskeeda’s Bill Apter conducted an interview with Lawler and he provided an update on how he’s doing physically. Jerry shared that he’s in rehab and the main thing that’s drawing him back is his voice. He said it’s slowly coming back.
I’ve had a bunch of different things and I’m still in rehab three times a week, and probably the main thing that’s drawing me back now, that you can probably tell as you hear me talk, my voice is not the same as it was beforehand. It’s slowly coming back, but it needed to come back a little more before I could make sense with my speech and vocabulary.
The main rehab session he’s involved in has to do with his speech. He shared that he’s been having conversations with a specialist and she’ll have him read things to improve his vocabulary.
One [rehab session] is speech – that’s my main one. That’s three times a week. When I just started this, right after I had the stroke, I could barely talk. Now I go in and I sit down with this rehab lady and we just talk about different things. She had me read stuff, and all of this stuff has just helped me day in and day out getting my vocabulary better.
Due to the stroke, Lawler does not have good control of his handwriting. He said it’s taken a while to come back to him.
My right arm and my right leg and everything on my right side of the body, it’s not hurt(ing) me where I can’t walk around. I can still walk around, but I don’t have really good control of writing my autograph. I can write my autograph pretty good, but I’ve been so proud of my autograph and artistic ability… but that’s all sort of taken a while to come back.
The WWE Hall of Famer was active in the ring at 73 years old prior to his medical episode. His last bout as of this writing was on January 21st.
