A message from Raquel Rodriguez.
WWE’s Raquel Rodriguez posted a video onto her Instagram and she shared that she’s been diagnosed with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. In her caption, she wrote the following:
I will share more on my healing journey later on when I have a better understanding of what’s happening but for now I love y’all and Happy New Year
Rodriguez stated in the video that M.C.A.S. has kept her from wrestling, traveling and going to the gym. She is glad she moved back to Texas when she did because she has the support of her family. She is looking forward to seeing what will happen in the new year.
What’s up guys. Happy New Year’s. So long story short, last year, I posted a video about being a WWE superstar with eczema and in the month of December, it got progressively worse and I have been diagnosed with something called Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. Basically, I was red, swollen, there was a lot happening in this area (head/torso) physically. It kept me from doing the things that I love like traveling, going to the gym and wrestling and I also didn’t wanna be on camera, I didn’t wanna look in the mirror and I understand that all of those things can mess with someone both emotionally and mentally but thank God I moved back to Texas when I did because I had the best support system in the world during this time which is my family. I am so grateful to them and everything they’ve done for me and to you guys as well who have sent me kind messages and reminded me that I didn’t have to go through this alone. So to anyone who’s been struggling or had to celebrate the holiday season a little bit differently this year, I just wanted to say, remember to give yourself a little bit of compassion and grace for the things that you don’t understand and the things that you can’t control. Life can be really hard sometimes and it can throw us these crazy curveballs and I know they feel like they’re gonna last forever but I promise they’re not. This is gonna pass. So, let’s go into 2024 remembering to give kindness to others and give kindness to ourselves. I can’t wait to see what’s gonna happen this year.
Per the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology website, the following is written about Mast Cell Activation Syndrome:
MCAS is a condition in which the patient experiences repeated episodes of the symptoms of anaphylaxis – allergic symptoms such as hives, swelling, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing and severe diarrhea. High levels of mast cell mediators are released during those episodes. The episodes respond to treatment with inhibitors or blockers of mast cell mediators. The episodes are called “idiopathic” which means that the mechanism is unknown – that is, not caused by allergic antibody or secondary to other known conditions that activate normal mast cells.
Evaluation for MCAS starts with determining whether the symptoms occur in separate attacks and are typical symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction without a clear cause. Mast cell mediators increase during the episode. Those mediators should be measured during acute episodes and at baseline looking for elevations during symptoms. Finally, the improvement with treatment using inhibitors of mast cell mediators completes the diagnosis.
