WWE Raw falls against National Championship game, big quarter in first hour

Airing against the College Football National Championship game, WWE Raw saw a big decline after last week’s large audience.

The January 8 edition of Raw from Portland averaged 1,464,000 viewers and 579,000 (0.44) in the 18-49 demographic, per Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics.

Last week’s show was bolstered by an appearance by Dwayne Johnson for a 22-minute segment and saw this week’s audience drop by 16% with the 18-49 audience falling by 27%. Excluding the “Best of” Raw on Christmas Day, it was the show’s lowest audience since November 20 and the lowest audience in the demo since November 13.

The Michigan vs. Washington national game averaged approximately 25,050,000 viewers across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU & ESPN Deportes and up from last year’s game which attracted 17,220,000 viewers, per Sports Media Watch.

Raw averaged 1,549,000 viewers and 585,000 in the 18-48 demo in the first hour, dropped to 1,486,000 and increased in the demo to 590,000 in hour two, and averaged 1,367,000 and 561,000 in the final hour.

In the 18-49 demo, males fell from 546,000 last week to 391,000 with the female decline from 251,000 to 188,000.

Adults 18-34 were down by 36% to 192,000 viewers while Adults 35-49 fell by 22% to 387,000.

Raw peaked in the opening quarter for CM Punk and Drew McIntyre with 1,756,000 viewers and 690,000 viewers and dropped by 17% and 19% respectively in the second quarter, per Wrestlenomics.

In Canada, Raw averaged 284,900 viewers and 123,000 in the 25-54 demographic on Sportsnet 360, which represented decrease of 14% in viewership and 19% in the demo from last week. Raw ranked third for the night in sports behind the Vancouver Canucks vs. New York Rangers and the College Football National Championship game.
