Shelton Benjamin: Quite frankly, I think I should still be in WWE right now

The Hurt Business became a topic of conversation as well.

Back in September, there were a wave of talent releases by WWE and included in that group was Shelton Benjamin. He was in the midst of his second go-around with WWE.

His exit from the company was brought up during a virtual signing with K & S WrestleFest. Benjamin expressed his thought that he should still be in WWE and if there was a chance for him to have another run, he’d take it.

In comparison to his first release, he feels he handled the more recent one better from an emotional standpoint. Benjamin added that he’s in no rush to get a job because he’s saved his money.

Well quite frankly, I think I should still be there right now but, yeah. As long as I’m healthy, if there’s a spot (for me there)…

I would definitely say I took this recent release better because my first time, I never did indies or anything like that so, I had no idea what was out there, because I went straight from college to WWE so I didn’t go through the indie phase, I didn’t learn anything about indies and all these other things so, I was pretty much like, ‘What now?’ I had no clue. So it was a little scarier, as opposed to the more recent time where it’s like, I know I’m gonna be alright, plus, I was a smart guy, I saved my money. So it’s not like I gotta get a job right now. It wasn’t so much I went into panic– not panic mode this same time around. It’s more so like, okay. It wasn’t a surprise. The first time, it was actually a bit of a surprise when I got the call the first time because to your point, I felt like I still was learning, I still was — I was what? Mid-30s? So it kind of came as a shock and a blow at the time and I didn’t handle it well the first few weeks as opposed to now, it was kind of just like, okay, what’s next?

Looking back at Benjamin’s recent run with WWE, that included his time as a part of The Hurt Business with Bobby Lashley, MVP and Cedric Alexander.

The group breaking up is something Benjamin still does not understand and says if anyone wants to know why they split, they’d have to ask Vince McMahon.

Ask Vince (McMahon why The Hurt Business didn’t continue on). Ask Vince. Tell him (person who asked question) if you find out the answer to that, please let me know because, to this day, doesn’t make sense to me but, again, ask Vince. I have no clue why that didn’t happen.

He went on to speak highly of former Hurt Business member Cedric Alexander. Benjamin thinks the one-time WWE Cruiserweight Champion is underrated, underutilized and underappreciated.

I think Cedric Alexander is a lot like me, only younger. His talent is unmatched. I believe he is definitely underutilized. He has all the tools and yeah, definitely underappreciated, underrated, underutilized, under, under, under. But that kid is absolutely — he’s pure gold.

Coming up on March 16th, Benjamin is going to be doing a meet-and-greet for The Wrestling REVOLVER in Clive, Iowa.
