AEW’s Forbidden Door pay-per-view event might be heading to one of the promotion’s top venues of the year.
A report released Thursday from Mike Johnson of PWInsider said that AEW plans to return to Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York, USA, with the idea being that they would showcase a PPV card instead of the usual TV special that is shot at the venue. Later that day, Andrew Zarian reported that AEW is planning to hold its third annual Forbidden Door event at Arthur Ashe Stadium in June.
Arthur Ashe Stadium has been the host of an annual TV special hosted by AEW for the past three years titled “Dynamite Grand Slam.” The venue, which has been set up for a capacity of as many as 20,000 by AEW in the past, is most well known for hosting the U.S. Open tennis grand slam every year.
Forbidden Door is a collaborative PPV card between AEW and NJPW that first debuted two years ago. The first show was in 2022 from Chicago, Illinois, with Jon Moxley overcoming Hiroshi Tanahashi in the main event. Last year’s card from Toronto, Ontario, Canada saw a double main event of Bryan Danielson vs. Kazuchika Okada, plus Will Ospreay vs. Kenny Omega.
AEW has yet to officially announce when they will return to the Arthur Ashe Stadium this year. It’s also unclear whether the promotion will also continue to host their “Grand Slam” event at the venue, or if a PPV will take its place.
