New Japan Cup 2024: Three more advance to the second round

The New Japan Cup continued Friday with three more advancing.

The card from Yamanashi was headlined by Shingo Takagi beating Yuya Uemura to advance to the second round of the 28-man tournament and an IWGP World Heavyweight title shot for the winner.

The match lasted over twenty-three minutes with Takagi using Last of the Dragon for the victory.

Takagi will draw Gabe Kidd in the second round after Kidd defeated Callum Newman on Friday’s show. This is Kidd’s third New Japan Cup and the first time he has advanced past the opening stage.

The other New Japan Cup match on the card saw Hikuleo beat Oleg Boltin with the Godsend and will advance to face EVIL in the second round, which begins on Monday.

The opening round matches conclude on Sunday with Jeff Cobb vs. Yota Tsuji, El Phantasmo vs. Mikey Nicholls, and Taichi vs. Ren Narita.

The second round will include SANADA vs. YOSHI-HASHI, Jack Perry vs. Toru Yano, David Finlay vs. Tanga Loa, Chase Owens vs. Hirooki Goto, EVIL vs. Hikuelo, Shingo Takagi vs. Gabe Kidd, Tsuji/Cobb vs. Phantasmo/Nicholls, and Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Taichi/Ren Narita.
