AEW has a new world champion, and his name is Swerve Strickland.
Strickland defeated Samoa Joe in the main event of Sunday’s Dynasty pay-per-view card from St. Louis, Missouri, making him the 11th-ever AEW World Champion.
Strickland finished the match in just under 18 minutes, connecting with a second Swerve Stomp to put away Joe. He overcame a few rough moments earlier in the match before winning, including taking a Muscle Buster in the ring and a hard slam onto concrete at ringside. The victory not only marks Strickland’s first time winning AEW’s top belt, but also makes him a singles champion in the promotion for the first time.
Joe held the title for 113 days, ending MJF’s lengthy run back in December at AEW Worlds End. He defended the title once, overcoming Strickland and Adam Page in a three-way at Revolution.
