**Last Wednesday, El Signo (Antonio Sánchez Rendón) died at age 69. Rendón was part of Los Misioneros de la Muerte alongside El Texano and Negro Navarro with the unit voted into the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame five years ago. Rendón began wrestling in 1971 and had a career lasting over forty years. He started his career under a mask but lost it very early in 1974 to Gatúbedo.
Two years later, he won the UWA (Universal Wrestling Association) world lightweight championship by defeating El Matematico and held it for over a year before vacating. He moved to the welterweight division, won that division’s title from Bobby Lee on June 24, 1979, and lost to Garringo in April 1980. During this era, he was placed with Navarro and Texano to form “The Death Missionaries” and programmed against Los Mosqueteros de Diablo of Brazo de Oro, Brazo de Plata, and El Brazo.
The Trios unit of Los Misioneros received their biggest spotlight during a match with El Santo, Rayo de Jalisco & Huracán Ramírez when Santo had a legitimate heart attack during the match, and “The Death Missionaries” were given the blame to the public and led to a massive wave of attention. Santo’s retirement match was staged on September 9, 1982, at El Toreo in Naucalpan teaming with El Solitario, Gori Guerrero & Huracán Ramírez to defeat Los Misioneros & Perro Aguayo in two consecutive falls. El Signo won the UWA’s junior light heavyweight title on June 10, 1983, from El Solitario after the latter turned on Los Misionerios and engaged in a lengthy feud. The three-man team won the UWA’s World Trios Championship in April 1987 and Signo would hold that version of the title five times in his career.
After Texano had given notice to UWA, Signo & Navarro teamed up with new members Black Power and Rocky Santana throughout UWA’s existence, which ended in 1995. Signo continued his career wrestling for AAA and CMLL, which included winning the Mexican National Trios titles with Blue Panther & Fuerza Guerrera in July 1996. Throughout the first decade of the 2000s, he lost his hair to Villano III multiple times, El Solar, and El Dandy. El Signo’s billed retirement match occurred on May 1, 2010, in a ten-man Mask vs. Hair Steel Cage Match with Signo’s team prevailing.
He returned for one more match in March 2013 with Navarro, Black Power & El Hijo del Signo against Brazo de Oro, Brazo de Platino, La Mascara & Super Brazo.
In 2019, they were elected to the WON Hall of Fame with 71 percent of the votes in the Mexican region and had the largest percentage of that year’s class alongside Ultimo Guerrero, Gedo, Villano III, Dr. Wagner Jr., Jim Crockett Sr., and Bearcat Wright.
In 2021, Lucha historian Alfredo Esparza named Los Misioneros de la Muerte the greatest Trios group ever.
**Raw airs against Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final tonight between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers, which should have a greater effect on the Canadian audience than in the U.S. If the NBA Finals reach a fifth game, it will air against Raw next Monday.
**WWE Raw is at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio for the go-home Raw before Clash at the Castle this Saturday. They are advertising the following matches for the show:
*Bron Breakker vs. Ilja Dragunov
*Sami Zayn vs. Otis
*Lyra Valkyria vs. IYO SKY
**NJPW had a great show on Sunday with Dominion in front of 7,254 (slightly above last year’s 7,040 for SANADA vs. Yota Tsuji) with El Desperado winning the Best of the Super Juniors and Jon Moxley retaining the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. The main event was excellent and would place it on my match recommendations alongside Shingo Takagi vs. HENARE and Jeff Cobb vs. Tomohiro Ishii. The lumberjack match was much better than I expected as the run-ins and interference were part of the show but never detracted from it. It was a strong usage of Yuji Nagata and Hiroyoshi Tenzan with EVIL taunting the legends by using their moves on Moxley. For a 25-minute match, I thought it was very good, and afterward, Moxley’s rematch with Tetsuya Naito was confirmed for Forbidden Door on June 30. One of the major results was Yota Tsuji pinning Hiroshi Tanahashi in the NEVER Six-Man tag title match as Tsuji, Hiromu Takahashi, and BUSHI won the belts. Chris Charlton outlined Tsuji being recruited by Tanahashi carrying his bags and washing his clothes in the Dojo and scoring a major win in his career. Tsuji avoided the High Fly Flow and hit Tanahashi with the Gene Blaster. Maybe Tanahashi should have been the president of WCW in 1999 with moves like this.
**Friday Night SmackDown averaged 165,500 viewers and 60,000 in the 25-54 demographic on Sportsnet 360 in Canada. The show ranked fourth among sports programming and was third in the demo behind the Toronto Blue Jays vs. Oakland A’s and the CFL game between Hamilton and Calgary.
**NXT is ramping up for a big audience on Tuesday with the tease that Cody Rhodes will appear. This follows two weeks of excellent numbers including NXT ranking first on cable last week. It coincides with a week where Dynamite is expected to be hurt airing against Game 3 of the NBA Finals on ABC. Last week, NXT averaged 768,000 viewers and 0.22 in the demo while Dynamite averaged 790,000 and 0.28. Dynamite has not fallen below 0.23 throughout the playoff season, but if there is a week where NXT could top them in 18-49, this could be it and it seems they are shooting for the largest audience they can with Rhodes’ involvement. NXT has announced Lexis King vs. Dante Chen in a Singapore Cane Match, Michin vs. Jaida Parker, and Je’Von Evans vs. Shawn Spears.
**Jonathan Gresham posted a photo while seated in the audience at NXT Battleground on Sunday. Gresham was seated with Gail Kim, and Anthem executives Ariel Shnerer and Anthony Cicione. There were UFC personalities in attendance including Jamahal Hill, Merab Dvalishvili, Brandon Moreno, Forrest Griffin, and Khalil Rountree Jr.
**The second episode of “Who Killed WCW?” airs on Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on VICE TV. This week’s show begins to break down the decline in 1998-99 and should result in a lot more discussion and debate following the comments on this show. The key events discussed include Bill Goldberg winning the WCW title at the Georgia Dome, the Finger Poke of Doom, and Bret Hart’s match with Goldberg at Starrcade 1999.
**TNA issued an update on its live events over the next several months. They have added shows on August 30 & 31 at Old Forester’s Paristown Hall in Louisville and Sept. 13 & 14 at TempleLive Cleveland Masonic in Ohio. They have not revealed the date or location for Bound for Glory in October but are promoting the site as “one of the most visited cities in the world.” The company returns this Friday with the Against All Odds special at Cicero Stadium in Illinois followed by tapings the next day at the venue.
**New Japan’s Despe Invitational pay-per-view took place from Korakuen Hall on Monday. The results included Dick Togo & Gedo over El Desperado & Danshoku Dino in the main event, Zack Sabre Jr. over Hikaru Sato, MAO vs. Chris Brookes vs. Masashi Takeda vs. El Phantasmo ended in a time-limit draw after 20-minutes, Hiromu Takahashi & Jun Kasai over Minoru Suzuki & Takayuki Ueki, DOUKI & Daisuke Sasaki over Eita & Violento Jack, Starlight Kid & Dragon Kid over El Desperado & Mima Shimoda, and Hiroshi Tanahashi & Toru Yano & Kyoko Inoue over Yuko Miyamoto, DASH Chisako & Isami Kodaka.
**Mike Santana’s Puerto Rican Weekend took place this past Saturday at the NYC Arena in Jamaica, Queens. Mike Santana retained the House of Glory Heavyweight in a No DQ match against Amazing Red in the main event, Carlos Ramirez beat Homicide to retain the Crown Jewel title, The Mane Event retained the tag titles against Primo Colon & Epico, Charles Mason beat Danny Maff, Mercedes Martinez defeated Tasha Steelz, and Pedro Dones defeated Chris Cage, Matt Awesome, Jarrett Diaz, Elijah Eden, and Corey Mac in a six-way contest.

**The next ALL TOGETHER card airs this Sunday on Abema PPV from Hokkaido with multiple Japanese groups working together to raise funds for victims of the Noto earthquake earlier this year. It is being promoted under the United Japan Pro Wrestling banner with the following matches:
