Rey Mysterio recalls suggesting idea of turning heel on Dominik Mysterio, glad it did not happen

Rey is glad things played out how they did .

It has been several years since Dominik Mysterio turned on his father Rey Mysterio. Their ongoing rivalry included a singles match at WrestleMania 39 and they were on opposite ends of a tag match at WrestleMania XL

A conversation about Rey never being a heel in WWE was struck up during his appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet. Rey stated that there was an occasion when he suggested the idea to Vince McMahon that would see him turn on Dominik.

Rey received feedback from colleagues who told him that he’s the babyface that could never turn heel. With hindsight, the WWE Hall of Famer feels the best outcome is what occurred and that is Dominik being the heel.

I remember bringing it up one time, when Dom (Mysterio) and I were working together (idea of turning on Dominik). I brought it up to Vince (McMahon) and it was brief. Like, ‘Maybe I turn on Dom’ and we continue with something along the way. But, getting feedback from some of my colleagues, like, ‘No. You’re the babyface that could never be heel. You’re Ricky Steamboat,’ you know? ‘Nobody can ever see you as a heel. I don’t think they would buy into it,’ and I’m kind of glad that I listened and that they didn’t listen to me because the best thing that could have happened is for Dom to become the heel and be the evil one.

The late Eddie Guerrero’s name came up throughout the chat and Rey said he often wonders what it would’ve been like for himself, Dominik and Eddie to share the ring together present-day.

I always ask myself this question and I like to, every now and then, kind of just let my brain just wander off. If Eddie (Guerrero) would still be here in this scenario with Dom (Mysterio) being who he is now, I can’t even imagine the kind of… pleasure we would bring to the ring, to the audience — of being able to see Dom, Eddie and myself. You know, it’d be such a cool moment and I do think about that a lot.

The next page in Dominik and Rey’s rivalry is going to be written on the July 1st Monday Night Raw. They’ll be going one-on-one on the show
