Former magazine publisher, editor & writer Dennis Brent passes away

Dennis Brent, who held many roles throughout his decades in the industry, died this past Sunday at the age of 73.

Longtime friend and confidant Jim Ross shared the news of Brent’s passing with a service to be held today in Dallas, Texas.

Brent graduated from the University of Texas focusing on Radio, Television & Film.

Brent’s entry into the profession came about through his work at a software company, PowerSoft Products, which he owned. Among its services was printing and met Percy Pringle (Bill Moody), who oversaw the distribution of the programs for World Class Championship Wrestling in Texas. Brent would be tasked with taking over the programs due to his skills with desktop publishing which was his bridge into professional wrestling.

Brent also oversaw the program for Mid-South/UWF and was publishing both promotions programs. Once Turner Broadcasting purchased Jim Crockett Promotions in November 1988, Brent was hired to run the publications division.

He worked in WCW for five years where his roles expanded beyond the magazine to include ringside photography and running the 1-900 hotlines, which were a major revenue generator featuring various WCW personalities involved. He remained with WCW until July 1994.

With close friend Jim Ross running talent relations in the WWF, Brent was hired in the summer of 1998 with tasks that included booking talent for personal appearances, major involvement with the company’s website and magazines, and having a role within talent relations.

In 2004, Brent was the writer of Steve Austin’s biography, The Stone Cold Truth, which reached the New York Times Bestseller list.

Brent was diagnosed with MS in 2006 and lost his ability to walk.

Brent was honored by the Cauliflower Alley Club in 2015 by being presented with the James Melby Pro Wrestling Historian Award and introduced by Terry Taylor.

Brent is survived by his wife Lynn and the couple had been married since 1978.
