Nick Wayne has been making the most out of the talented locker room he’s surrounded by in AEW.
For almost all of his time in AEW thus far, 19-year-old Wayne has wrestled as part of Christian Cage’s Patriarchy stable. This has allowed him to work closely with a veteran of the scene on a weekly basis, providing him a chance to grow immensely.
As Wayne described it, it was Cage’s choice to take him under his wing. He remembers the former TNT Champion telling him “‘I wouldn’t have taken you in if I didn’t want to. I saw so much potential in you since you started here and I knew you had to come with me, so thank you for proving me right.'”
Speaking to the Battleground Podcast, Wayne recently reflected on his ability to pick the brains of wrestling legends.
“Getting to be under the learning tree of guys like Christian and once at a time Sting. It’s just unreal the fact that I’m so young and have a guy like that at arm’s reach of distance that I can just reach out to whenever and get critique,” he said. “I was once asking Sting, and now asking Christian ‘Please watch my matches and just tear me apart with critiques because I wanna get better.’ It’s great to hear what they have to say, they’re some of the best to do it. Everywhere they’ve gone they’ve succeeded in their career, and I want to do the same thing.”
Wayne said that it was especially huge to work with Cage when it comes to promos, a part of his game that he hoped to improve upon.
“I’ve always thought my promos were my weak point … But having Christian who is like the best at promos, you couldn’t ask for a better teacher. He helps me, I’m feeling so much more confident now talking and cutting promos and whatnot.”
