Rey Mysterio opens up about presentation of ‘eye popping out’ at WWE Extreme Rules 2020

He had to look at from an ‘outside point of view.’

As WWE was running shows out of the Performance Center during the early stages of the pandemic, one of the Premium Live Events they presented was Extreme Rules 2020.

The show featured an ‘Eye for an Eye’ match between Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio. During the bout, Rollins jammed Mysterio’s eye against a point of the ring steps. Cameras zoomed in on Mysterio and he was holding his ‘eyeball’ that was no longer in the socket.

He sat down with Sam Roberts at Fanatics Fest to discuss the presentation of that moment. Mysterio shared that he’s game for anything, as long as it’s explained in a way that makes sense. He said the idea of it sounds silly present-day and probably sounded silly in 2020.

You kind of have to look at it from an outside point of view (Mysterio said about the Eye for an Eye moment at Extreme Rules) and… being the fact that we were going through a pandemic, we didn’t have fans inside the building. We were doing something very different. So, I’ve always been game with whatever it is that we wanna create next, I’m in. Just explain to me how we can make it come across where it makes sense and at the end of the day, it is TV. We know it’s not reality. But overall, the way it was explained. Now, it sounds funny, sounds silly. At the time, it sounded probably sillier. But we thought we can pull it away, we can pull through with this. But, overall, those are like challenges that present themselves and you either come across and do a good job and then talk about it later, maybe laugh. Or say, ‘Oh, that was good’ or, ‘That was bad.’ But overall, it’s in the moment that you have to live and you kind of have to push through it and make it work somehow, way or another.

The WWE Hall of Famer is a member of the Monday Night Raw roster. He was in action on the 8/26 show and was pinned by his son, Dominik Mysterio.
