It was an emotional night.

As of this writing, it was three years ago that Bianca Belair and Mercedes Moné f.k.a. Sasha Banks headlined night one of WWE WrestleMania 37. They are the first two Black women to main event WWE’s biggest event of the calendar year.

Moné took a look back at that match as she was speaking to WTOP. She remembers Belair becoming emotional at the start. Mercedes joked that she wanted her to stop because they would end up slipping in the ring from their tears.

It was so emotional. That was one of my biggest dreams since I was 10 years old, but it was so big I didn’t think it was possible, then here I was at WrestleMania 37 in the middle of the ring looking at Bianca (Belair) like, wow, we are doing this. This is so much bigger than us, bigger than wrestling. That moment was so special. The way she looked at me, I was like, girl, you better stop before I start bawling and we slip in the ring from our tears.

Further speaking about programs she had in the WWE, Mercedes touched on her history with Charlotte Flair. She described it as an ‘amazing experience’ and feels it contributed to putting women’s wrestling on the map.

It meant a lot because I started out with Charlotte in 2012 and I remember being in developmental with her. With that last name of Flair, I was like, ‘Just because you’re a Flair, you’re not me…’ Having that feud with Charlotte was such an amazing experience. I really feel like it helped put women’s wrestling on the map and she pushed me to new heights that I’ve never been before in the ring, so I had an incredible feud with her.

Moné is gearing up for her NJPW STRONG Women’s Title defense against Momo Watanabe at Capital Collision.

She’s also the reigning AEW TBS Champion and successfully defended her title against Britt Baker at All In. To read Moné’s thoughts about how the match turned out, click here.
