A Pause Between Grand Slams

If you were tuning into Rampage this week hoping to see more from Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, NY you were out of luck as this edition of Rampage was taped alongside Collision last week from Springfield, MA. The first match of the evening was House of Black’s Buddy Matthews and Malakai Black taking on Lio Rush and Action Andretti. Of note was that Top Flight seemingly had a different attitude and wore what Tony Schiavone described as bombardier jackets rather than the usual Top Flight gear.

As expected, the action in this one was fast and furious with Action Andretti jaw-jacking with House of Black way more so than usual. At one point, The Righteous were shown backstage watching this match.

In the end, Action Andretti tagged himself in and argued with Lio Rush allowing Malakai Black to hit the spinning kick for the win. After the match, Andretti grabbed a bottle of water and threw it at Brody King. King attacked Andretti and was about to destroy him when Top Flight pulled him to safety. Top Flight continued to argue amongst theirselves as the segment ended.

Anna Jay Promo

Lexi Nair interviewed Anna Jay backstage who mentioned she hadn’t been around in three months. Anna said that she didn’t know exactly how she fits in at AEW but she was ready to find out.

Anna Jay vs. Robyn Renegade

The story with this match was Anna Jay showing off what she learned in Japan while competing in the Stardom 5Star Grand Prix.

Anna Jay picked up the win with the Gory Bomb in just under three minutes.

Ricochet & Will Ospreay Sit-Down

A clip of the YouTube exclusive sit-down that Renee Paquette was shown. The full video can be seen on AEW’s YouTube Channel.

Takeshita vs. Angelico

Next up was Konosuke Takeshita taking on Angelico. Tony Schiavone explained that Don Callis was not there because he was on one of his infamous scouting trips somewhere in the world.

This match was back-and-forth but the crowd was pretty much silent for the majority despite some impressive moves. Also possible is that a lot of the Dynamite crowd may have left before Rampage began as is known to happen. Unsurprisingly, Takeshita won with the Raging Fire in just over nine minutes.

The Acclaimed x MxM

Next on the show was The Acclaimed against two local talents Fancy Ryan Clancy and TJ Crawford. For the first time in what feels like many months, Max Caster rapped down to the ring including referencing eating dogs and cats in Springfield. The Acclaimed made short work of Clancy and Crawford in just over two minutes. Caster & Bowens seemed to debut a new unnamed finisher that was set up like the Magic Killer but then flips the opponent with Bowens sitting out.

After the match, Max Caster got on the mic and said that MxM Collection only needed to ask about giving his jacket a fashion upgrade. Caster warned that they were going to crash MxM’s party on Grand Slam Collision. MxM then appeared on the screen and told them that they’re not invited but they would have the greatest debut in fashion history.

Willow Nightingale vs. Taya Valkyrie

The Rampage main event was Willow Nightingale taking on Taya Valkyrie whom recently aligned with Deonna Purrazzo.

Willow picked up the victory over Taya after hitting her with the Gut Wrench Powerbomb.

After the match, a Twitter exclusive video was posted with Taya and Deonna:

Final Thoughts

An entirely skippable episode of Rampage, especially hampered by being aired between the two big Grand Slam events from Arthur Ashe Stadium. Usually there’s at least one match that’s remarkable and makes it feel like it was worth watching and Willow/Taya was the top contender but unfortunately even that was not enough. Perhaps the rumors of the end of Rampage may be true after all.
