Carmella is still on her road to recovery.

The former Smackdown Women’s Champion and WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion has been out of the ring for nearly two years, an absence which first kicked off so she could deliver her first child, Dimitri.

However, Carmella’s time away from performing has extended beyond her maternity leave period due to an injury she sustained due to delivering her first child in November 2023.

Carmella has been dealing with “drop foot,” a nerve injury which causes someone to have trouble lifting the front of their foot. Mayo Clinic says the diagnosis can cause someone to drag the front of their foot on the ground while walking.

The physical setback has been a massive hurdle for Carmella’s eventual return to the ring, which she hopes to have someday. She has previously described the issue as the main factor preventing her from an in-ring return, describing it seven months ago on The Nikki & Brie Show.

As 2024 comes to a close, Carmella has revealed that she is still trying to treat her instance of drop foot with physical therapy. She described the injury in a recent Instagram Live with Bayley, as part of a charity drive hosted by the former Damage CTRL member.

“I love being a mom, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done ever in my whole entire life. But that being said, of course I miss WWE. Of course I miss everyone. I miss being Carmella. I miss performing. I miss it so much. I wish I had an update for you guys. For those who don’t know, I have some nerve damage in my foot from delivering Dimitri. I have what’s called drop foot, and it’s like this nerve behind your knee. I’ve been dealing with all of that … I’m just doing physical therapy, going to see the chiropractor, getting MRIs, and doing all of this stuff I never thought I would be doing. Here we are and hopefully, eventually, nerves do take a lot of time to heal, but eventually we’ll get back to it for sure.”

Carmella’s last in-ring appearance since going on leave saw her share the ring with Bayley, both being part of the losing team in a Madison Square Garden 10-woman tag match.
