AEW Rampage New Year’s Smash Results

  • Chris Jericho over Anthony Bowens via Belt Shot in 9:39
  • Private Party over Leo Sparrow & Alec Price via Gin & Juice in 1:02
  • Thunder Rosa over Leila Grey via Cobra Clutch in 7:48
  • Hook over Nick Wayne via Redrum in 12:29

The King of New York vs. The King of Scissoring

The final Rampage “for the foreseeable future” kicked off with The King of New York taking on Anthony Bowens who was accompanied by Max Caster who performed a short but less-than rap about Jericho, seemingly annoying Bowens in the process. Then early in the match, Caster got in the way of Bowens hamming it up for the camera and Bowens shoved him a bit.

Jericho had Bowens in the Liontamer for the entirety of the first commercial break which was well over two minutes and because of which, Bowens was selling his back for the remainder of the match. Bowens did manage to dive off the top rope as the NYC crowd chanted for Big Bill.

Bryan Keith then tried to interfere but this only allowed for Max Caster to get into the ring and slam Jericho and The Acclaimed to hit the Scissor Me Timbers. Bryan Keith then grabbed the ROH World Title and attempt to hit Bowens, only for Caster to try to swipe it and accidentally hit Bowens in the process. Thus, Jericho picked up the win.

More Kings of New York

A video was shown of Private Party walking the street of New York City with paparazzi following them. This brought the tag champions out for the next match of the night, taking on Alec Price and Leo Sparrow. Private Party won in just over one minute. After the match, Action Andretti and Lio Rush came out and started brawling with Private Party. Shortly thereafter, Top Flight was out as well as all three teams threw fisticuffs with AEW officials attempting to separate them.

The Book of Hobbs

Next up, Powerhouse Hobbs talked about how he would take Takeshita’s title at Worlds End.

Thunder Rosa vs. Leila Grey

The next match on the card was Thunder Rosa taking on Leila Grey. It was noted by the announcers that Leila Grey was from NYC and got a great reaction from the crowd even though it wasn’t shown on camera. Leila Grey continues to show she can go in the ring so it would be great to eventually get her into a decent story. Thunder Rosa picked up the win with the Cobra Clutch to which Grey tapped out immediately.

There’s the Signal!

The main event of Rampage saw Hook taking on Nick Wayne accompanied by The Patriarchy. Wayne jumped Hook before the bell but Hook quickly recovered and gained control despite his hand being in a cast hampering his offense. Christian Cage then slammed Hook’s hand with the metal contract box, causing himself and the rest of The Patriarchy to get ejected by Referee Bryce Remsburg.

After a commercial break, Nick Wayne had just successfully torn Hook’s cast off his arm and began a full-on assault on the limb as the match continued. Suddenly, The Patriarchy reemerged and immediately Shibata appeared with a giant 2×4 and chased them away.

Hook then applied the Redrum only to be reversed. Nick Wayne came off the top rope but was caught in the Redrum again and passed out, giving Hook the victory. Curiously, there were still about ten minutes left before the show was scheduled to go off the air…

Marina Has A Camera

We cut to the fire escape of the Hammerstein Ballroom where the Death Riders have Darby Allin dead to rights. They take a chair and wrap it around Allin’s neck and Claudio Castagnoli stomps it. Then a prone Allin is tossed down the metal stairs.

After one more commercial break, Jon Moxley and Marina Shafir are in the ring. Moxley says if anyone has a problem with him, his people or what they do to come out right now.

Komander comes out and gets jumped by Claudio out of nowhere. Top Flight is out next, but they get jumped too. Orange Cassidy then comes out but he is stopped by Marina Shafir. This brings out Willow Nightingale who starts brawling with Shafir.

This then begins full on chaos with essentially the whole locker room emptying to the biggest brawl in AEW history. Meanwhile, Christian Cage is in one of the balconies watching over everything with the contract in his hand. PAC starts hitting AEW equipment which causes the lights to go out.

Eventually, Mox and Marina find their way to the AEW production truck and with Mox’s call, Rampage ends.

Final Thoughts

Well, Rampage… you’ve been fun (mostly). With no official announcement that Rampage is done for good, one has to wonder if it reappears somewhere down the line as something else. That said, this episode flew by and was easily consumable. In a world with more and more three hour wrestling shows, there still seems to be a place for one hour shows (NXT circa Takeover Brooklyn I anyone?) but alas, here we are.
