Rita Chatterton details Bret Hart apologizing for slandering her after she went public with sexual assault allegation against Vince McMahon

Chatterton and Hart had a conversation and he apologized.

In 1992, after former WWF/E referee Rita Chatterton went public with her allegation that Vince McMahon sexually assaulted her in the summer of 1986, her claim was met with some detractors and one of those names was Bret Hart.

An interview with Hart was conducted one year after there was a multimillion-dollar lawsuit settlement between McMahon and Chatterton and he shared that he expressed regret over the situation. Hart added that he apologized to Chatterton when he saw her at a convention.

Chatterton dove into that interaction during her appearance on the Power & Glory podcast. She appreciated Hart’s apology and stated that she understood his stance to a certain degree. She said Hart was young and was making a lot of money working for McMahon.

I’ll tell you something, you wanna hear a real man? Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart apologized to me. Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart, many years ago, back in the 90s, went on national television and called me all kinds of names and it was horrible. It was horrible. About a year and a half ago, I seen him… and he apologized to me. That’s a real man. I walked up to him and I just said to him, ‘Well, I only have one question for you Bret’ and he looked at me and this is the first time I had seen him, and he said, ‘What’s that?’ And I said, ‘Why?’ And he looked at me. I said, ‘You don’t know who I am, do you?’ And he says, ‘No, I’m sorry. I don’t.’ I said, ‘I’m Rita Marie’ and he looked at me and he said, ‘Oh my –’ he said, ‘Rita, my wife and I just talked about you a few months ago, and I owe you an apology,’ and the man apologized to me. That’s a real man and I forgave him. 30 years, I held that… Because like I said, he called me a skank. Called me a liar, called me a skank, called me all kinds of names… And he apologized and can’t ask no more than that.

I had a conversation with Bret Hart and will I allow him back into my circle? Yes, I would, because of the conversation we had. He was also young, he was also making a ton of money, and he did what he did for his reasons and he told me his reasons and we had a nice, long conversation with him and yes, I would give him another shot. Would I trust him completely? No. I’ll never trust anybody like that completely again. But I would let him back in my circle. But it depends on the situation. It depends on the people. You know, it depends… I can forgive but I can’t always forget.

McMahon is currently in the midst of a sex trafficking lawsuit that was filed by former WWE employee Janel Grant. The latest on that can be found here.
