Canadian band Our Lady Peace has opted to “reclaim” one of its songs despite its connection to Chris Benoit.
During the band’s 30th Anniversary tour in Calgary this past Wednesday, lead singer Raine Maida spoke to the audience at the Scotiabank Saddledome before performing “Whatever.” He explained that the song has a “troubled past” due to the Benoit link but was opting to reclaim it.

The song was licensed by WWE to serve as Benoit’s theme song beginning in 2002 and remained his signature entrance song until his death in June 2007.
Benoit murdered his wife Nancy and son Daniel before taking his own life during that weekend. WWE has taken a policy of eliminating any references to Benoit, although they did preserve his matches on the WWE Network.
The band has evolved its stance as it had previously addressed the exclusion of “Whatever” from its set list during a 2012 interview with The Huffington Post.
