Steven Borden’s match at AEW All Out was stopped by the ringside doctor after he appeared to strike the back of his head on the mat.
Borden was teaming with TNT Champion Darby Allin against Kyle Fletcher & Kevin Knight, with the winners earning a future shot at the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
Late in the match, Knight and Borden climbed opposite turnbuckles and launched themselves toward one another. They collided in midair, with Borden appearing to hit the back of his head as he landed.
Borden remained down as AEW physician Dr. Michael Sampson entered the ring to examine him. Referee Bryce Remsburg subsequently called for the bell, awarding the match to Fletcher & Knight by doctor stoppage.
AEW showed one replay of the collision while Borden was being checked before cutting away to Excalibur, Taz and Tony Schiavone at the commentary desk. Borden’s departure from ringside was not shown.
The commentators stressed the legitimate risks involved in professional wrestling and supported the decision to stop the match. Taz said that while viewers may want to see a definitive conclusion, the safety of the wrestlers had to take priority.
Before the stoppage, Borden had received a strong response during his stretches in the ring, trading strikes with Fletcher and later running through both opponents after receiving a hot tag from Allin.
Fletcher & Knight are now the number-one contenders to the AEW World Tag Team Championship.
