Smackdown Results: Bloodline Victorious, Owens & Rhodes Argue

Randy Orton Returns to Smackdown

Smackdown kicked off with Randy Orton saying that he had some business to handle on Raw but missed being on Smackdown on a Friday Night. Orton said that he could count the number of people he can trust on one hand but Cody Rhodes is one of those people. Yet it was hard for him to see Rhodes agree to team up with Roman Reigns at Bad Blood. With that, Orton called Rhodes out to the ring. Cody came down to the ring and said he would take Reigns at his word and it was time for The Bloodline to be killed. Orton said it was no problem as they shook hands but continued “Unless you make it a problem”. 

This brought out Kevin Owens, wearing an RKO shirt but before he could speak, The Bloodline came out and Solo said that Cody would need Roman Reigns and that Orton and Owens let him down every time they tried to take The Bloodline down. Owens then retorted by challenging The Bloodline to a tag team match. Cody then tried to suggest that it could be a 6-man Tag but Owens stopped him and said that Rhodes already had a match at Bad Blood and wanted him and Orton against Fatu and Sikoa.

Nia Threatens Tiffany

Backstage, Nia Jax was complaining that Bayley and Naomi were facing each other tonight for an opportunity for her title. Jax then grabbed Tiffany Stratton by the throat and said that if this ends bad for her, it’ll end really badly for Tiffany. 

WWE Women’s Championship #1 Contenders Match

The first match of the evening was Bayley taking on Naomi with the winner going on to face Nia Jax for the WWE Women’s Championship at Bad Blood. This match was set up after the double pin by Bayley and Naomi on Nia Jax last week. As the match began, Michael Cole noted that Naomi had only pinned Bayley once in her career and she hadn’t held singles gold since 2017. The two started off the match slow but slowly the intensity grew as Naomi hit a corkscrew plancha on Bayley on the outside. 

After the break, Bayley was mounting a comeback with Cole noting that Naomi dominated throughout the break. Naomi then stopped Bayley’s momentum with a Rear View followed by a series of kicks and a head scissors spike to the mat. Naomi followed that up with a Blockbuster from the top rope but Bayley was able to counter with a sunset flip into the turnbuckles which they didn’t quite nail. Bayley then hit a Bayley to Belly followed by an elbow drop off the top rope for the victory. A visibly frustrated Naomi patted Bayley on the shoulder but then walked off. 

Andrade x Knight x Hayes

Andrade ran into LA Knight backstage and told him that a real man shakes someone’s hand to show respect and he lost his respect. Then from out of nowhere, Carmelo Hayes nailed LA Knight, leading into Match 6 between Hayes and Andrade in their seemingly never-ending series. 

Carmelo Hayes vs. Andrade VI: Oklahoma City Under Siege

With Andrade up in the series 3-2, this match kicked off with a frenzied pace, seeing Andrade attempt a Dustin Rhodes-style power slam on the apron with him still in the ring. 

After the commercial, Carmelo Hayes had recovered and was in control even hitting Andrade with a brutal-looking First 48 out of nowhere. Andrade then took to the offensive hitting the double knees onto Hayes in the corner followed by an attempt at The Message but Hayes countered with an incredible-looking diving reverse DDT off the second rope. 

After a second commercial break, the action continued fast and furious with Hayes showboating during a pin attempt and just missing the three count. Hayes then countered a top rope maneuver from Andrade with a swinging neck breaker as the crowd chanted “holy sh*t”.

LA Knight’s music hit and Knight attempted to go after Hayes but instead got in Andrade’s way allowing Hayes to score the pinfall with a roll-up. After the match, Knight and Andrade argued and Knight tried to shake Andrade’s hand but Andrade stormed off instead. 

Owens Says No

Backstage, Cody Rhodes approached Owens and Orton and said he wanted to talk to Owens. Owens said no – and he and Orton needed to discuss their match tonight against The Bloodline and that he didn’t want Rhodes out at ringside either. Owens said he was going to go put his gear on, leaving Orton and Rhodes alone. Randy said that if The Tongans got involved tonight, it would be 4 on 2 and despite what Owens said, he would love to have Cody out there and he’d talk to Kevin. 

Styles Promo Package

A brief promo package aired featuring AJ Styles and stating that Styles is returning next Friday on Smackdown from Nashville. 

Michin vs. Piper Niven

Ahead of her Dumpster Match next week against Chelsea Green, Michin took on Piper Niven next. Chelsea Green accompanied Niven to the ring and Michael Cole played as if the garbage smelled horrible, yelling at Green and asking her what’s in it. Green distracted Michin early in the match allowing Niven to take control. 

Niven continued to dominate Michin after the ad break, hitting her with a pounce and a cannonball in the corner. Michin then recovered and countered a Black Hole Slam into a Crucifix Bomb for a two-count. Niven then hit a Michinoku Driver for her own near fall. Niven then attempted another cannonball on the outside but Michin moved and Niven landed on the garbage can. Michin then took out Chelsea Green with a boot to the face and then hit Eat Defeat on Niven for the win.

Tag Title Ladder Match Promo

A video package aired hyping next week’s WWE Tag Team Championship Ladder Match between DIY, The Bloodline, and The Street Profits. 

Jade & Bianca, Hosts

Another video package aired featuring Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill in which they announced they would be hosting Bad Blood next Saturday and teased they might bring some “VIP friends” with them to Atlanta.

Naomi / Bayley

Backstage, Naomi pranked Bayley pretending she was mad at her after their match. The two hugged and Naomi then ran into Tiffany Stratton which led to Naomi challenging her for next week. 

 

The Bloodline vs. Owens & Orton

Early in the match, Randy Orton attempted to slam Jacob Fatu through the announce table but Fatu popped right up, no-selling the move. Orton’s switch flipped and he slammed him three more times onto the table. Solo Sikoa then also got one himself, all the while the announce table refused to break. 

After the commercial, The Bloodline was back in control with Solo Sikoa and Kevin Owens battling on the top turnbuckle. Owens attempted a Swanton but Sikoa was able to get his knees up with Owens landing squarely on them. Owens began to fight back and finally made a hot tag to Orton. Orton hit power slams on both Bloodline members and then set up for the RKO when Fatu distracted him allowing Sikoa to hit a Samoan Drop. Orton then tagged Owens back in who went to work taking out both opponents on the outside.

The Tongans then came out allowing Sikoa to hit the Spinning Solo for a big two count. Cody Rhodes then came out and attacked The Tongans and Randy Orton RKO’d Tonga. Kevin Owens hit Solo with a Stunner but Fatu threw Cody into the ring and he inadvertently hit the referee interrupting the likely three count. Owens was hit with multiple superkicks and succumbed to Sikoa. 

After the match, Owens shoved and argued with Cody with Randy Orton attempting to play peacemaker. Just as the show was ending, Owens said “Okay okay” and briefly hugged Cody and the show went off the air.

Final Thoughts

The highlight this week was the sixth match in the series between Andrade and Carmelo Hayes. With any other pairing, this could have easily become overdone and drawn out but these two are just firing on all cylinders. It’s too bad that LA Knight got involved in the finish because without that run-in this was very good. The rest of the show was mostly set up for next week’s go-home show and Bad Blood the following night although Kevin Owens’s emerging beef with Cody Rhodes is infinitely more interesting than their feud going into Bash in Berlin.
