Towards the later portion of Layla’s run in WWE, she suffered an ACL and MCL injury. She returned to in-ring action in 2012.
Her first match back was in developmental at FCW. For her second match, she was back on the main roster and won the WWE Divas Championship at Extreme Rules. During her appearance on They Made Their Way To The Ring, she touched on that moment and feels it was not the best move for her to win the belt that quickly. Layla thinks it would have been better to tell an underdog story.
Yes (I had doubts about my future after ACL & MCL injury). Absolutely. They did. I was very nervous. I was so scared before I went out there. I think if you even watch the match, you can see I’m just anxious, ready to get it done, really in disbelief and of course, what’s next for me? What’s my future? How’s my career gonna pan out? Am I making the right decision? You get really nervous too. Okay, if I go this way. So you get scared that you don’t wanna make a decision, because you’re gonna make a mistake. I was very nervous, very scared and to be honest with you, I don’t think that was the right move for me (winning WWE Divas Title in second match after injury). I think me coming back and winning the title like that, I don’t think it made my career really better. I think it would have been better I think if I would have come back and kind of been the underdog and fought my way and chased the title, so it meant more so when I did win, it would be even more meaningful to me and to everybody else. But, I understand why, creatively, they went that way.
That title win was Layla’s last in WWE. She held the championship from April until September of 2012.
