It’s Going to Be Different

Smackdown kicked off with Corey Graves welcoming Wade Barrett back to Smackdown as Michael Cole was “on assignment”. The first segment was the “New” Bloodline coming out to the ring and Solo Sikoa claimed he was the man that created a bigger and stronger Bloodline and Roman Reigns and Jimmy Uso can’t do a thing about it and Jey Uso doesn’t want anything to do with them. Solo said the beatdowns will finally stop if Roman comes to the ring by the night’s end and acknowledges him. This brought out Jey Uso.

Jey addressed Solo saying he wasn’t there to fight him because he still cares about him and Jimmy and Roman aren’t in the building yet. Jey asked Solo to consider what he’s doing to the family and the Bloodline. Jimmy reiterated that he left the family to go to Raw and win the Intercontinental Championship. Jey said that the ulafala is earned not taken and he is dividing the family.

Solo said that he’ll always have a place in “his” Bloodline and all Jey has to do is acknowledge him. Jey then asked why Solo had to go get Tama, Tanga, and Jakob – and there was a reason why they never brought in Jakob. Jey finished: “The next time I see you, it’s going to be different”.

#1 Contender’s Triple Threat #1

The first match of the evening was the first of two triple-threat matches with the two winners going on to face each other for a shot at the Tag Team Champions The Tongans. This match featured Pretty Deadly, DIY, and The Street Profits with only the Profits getting a televised entrance. The action was fast and furious here with the Profits and Pretty Deadly getting early near falls. The announce team kept hammering home how “crazy” it was with three legal men so of course it played into the finish. The Profits hit their Doomsday Blockbuster on Elton Prince and went to cover him but he was not legal. In the meantime, DIY hit Meet in the Middle on Kit Wilson and although the pins happened simultaneously, DIY were declared the winners much to the chagrin of the Street Profits.

Roman & Jimmy Arrive

Roman Reigns and Jimmy Uso arrived at the arena blasting music and Jimmy said that he had never heard that Travis Scott song to which Roman replied, “That’s because it isn’t out yet”. They ran into Jey and Roman told him that he was proud of him – they all were. Jey just responded with “No Yeet” and Roman said “I told you” to Jimmy and they walked off.

Sniffy Time

It was revealed that Tiffany Stratton had the flu and could not participate in the scheduled tag match tonight with her and Nia Jax taking on Bayley and Naomi. WWE Women’s Speed Champion Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell entered and argued that Candice as a champion would be a great tag team partner. Nick Aldis made the match and Nia Jax said that if Candice doesn’t hold up her end she will end her.

Lash Legend vs. Piper Niven

Next was “NXT Upstart” Lash Legend with Jakara Jackson taking on Piper Niven with Chelsea Green. WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Jade Cargill (sporting a new shorter hairstyle) and Bianca Belair were shown in the front row. Early on, Chelsea Green attempted to interfere but was taken out by Jakara Jackson. Legend avoided a second-rope splash from Niven and then Legend hit her finisher for the pinfall in three minutes. After the match, Legend and Jackson set their sights on the Tag Champs in the first row.

Acknowledge Him?

Backstage, Roman Reigns said Jimmy Uso tried his best to garner the help of Jey Uso but it was time to do things his way. Roman said he was going to acknowledge Solo tonight.

Crown Jewel Championship

WWE Champion Cody Rhodes came out next with the Crown Jewel Championship prominently displayed in the ring. Rhodes said that it was all about who would be the first-ever Crown Jewel Champion and there will be a definitive winner between him and Gunther. Cody went on to say that he would win the championship for his daughter and next week he invites Gunther to Smackdown for a face-to-face.

Kevin Owens, Underappreciated?

A Kevin Owens video, seemingly shot on his phone, was shown and he said things have never felt as bad as they did right now. He said that his not being allowed at Smackdown was unfair made him wonder how appreciated he is by WWE. But worst of all for him is what happened with Randy Orton who broke his trust. Owens said he didn’t know if or when he could come back.

After that, we cut to Nick Aldis and Randy Orton who said he wanted his hands on Owens at Crown Jewel. Aldis said he couldn’t do that because it came from “up above”. Orton said he knew who to talk to.

#1 Contender’s Triple Threat #2

The next match was the second of two triple-threat tag matches, with the winner here going on to face DIY. This match featured A-Town Down Under, Los Garza, and MCMG, whose debut was spoiled by WWE on Twitter earlier in the day.

The match began with Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin showing off their high-flying offense. At first, it appeared that the crowd wasn’t very familiar with MCMG but as time went on they seemed to start to get behind them. Los Garza managed to get a few impressive tandem moves but MCMG ultimately prevailed with their Skull & Bones finisher.

Andrade & Hayes

Byron Saxton interviewed Andrade and Carmelo Hayes backstage and they teased their “Game 7” match next week on Smackdown. The two quickly turned to brawling and had to be separated by WWE officials. Later, Nick Aldis announced a special referee for their match next week and LA Knight interjected accepting the role.

Women’s Tag Match

The final match of the night was Bayley and Naomi taking on Nia Jax and stand-in partner Candice LeRae with Indi Hartwell.

The faces were in control of this match early on until Candice LeRae distracted the referee allowing Indi Hartwell to ram Bayley into the ring post, leading to Candice LeRae getting the surprise pinfall victory for her team.

Roman & Solo

Roman Reigns was out for the main event segment by himself and teased it being the last time to acknowledge him. This immediately brought out Solo (also solo) and Roman said that after everything they’ve been through, they were divided and broken. Reigns asked what he had to do to fix this and Sikoa said he had to acknowledge him. Reigns said “I acknowledge you” and Solo said it wasn’t good enough and he needed Roman to acknowledge him as his Tribal Chief “or else”. Roman responded by yelling an aggressive “or else what”, and Solo laughed that Roman would never change. Solo snapped his fingers and the rest of The Bloodline appeared with a beaten Jimmy Uso.

Roman Reigns then decimated all four members of The Bloodline himself and then spotted the ulafala. Just as he put it on, Solo hit him with a low blow and the beatdown was on. Finally, Solo hit the Samoan Spike twice on Roman leaving him lying as the show went off the air.

Announced for Smackdown Next Week in Brooklyn:

  • Face-to-Face: Cody Rhodes & Gunther
  • #1 Contender’s Match: DIY vs. MCMG
  • Part VII: Andrade vs. Carmelo Hayes

Final Thoughts

MCMG’s debut seemed a bit underwhelming. Especially with a theme song that seemed out of Vince-era music – although I get what they were going for. Other than that, the build to Crown Jewel just feels empty but that’s pretty much par for the course. Kevin Owens remains the most interesting character on the show even though he currently isn’t allowed on the show. The Bloodline storyline spun its wheels from last week, despite an appearance by Jey Uso.
