Wade Barrett on the chance of an in-ring return: There’s a tiny chance, but don’t hold your breath

It’s been over eight years since Wade Barrett last wrestled a match.

Since that last appearance – a loss alongside Sheamus in a tag title bout against The New Day on a 2016 episode of Raw – Barrett has transitioned into a career as an on-screen figure within the industry.

Barrett spent a few years on the independent scene, working as a commentator for NWA along with opportunities in WCPW and World of Sport. Then, in 2018, he got the call to rejoin WWE as part of their broadcast team.

Barrett currently serves as a commentator for Monday Night Raw, working alongside ESPN vet Joe Tessitore. It is, arguably, one of the biggest broadcast roles one can achieve in the wrestling industry.

While he has found loads of success on the mic, some might wonder if the 44-year-old ex-Intercontinental Champion ever has the temptation to step back into the ring.

In a recent interview with PWMania, Barrett said he isn’t against a return but warns fans to not necessarily expect it either.

“If the opportunity arises, obviously it’s something I would consider and think about and think, ‘Could I deliver something here’ but similarly, I’m absolutely thrilled with my role on commentary,” he said. “It’s not something I’m looking to step away from. I don’t have some itch to scratch like a lot of the older guys have when they talk about comebacks. I’m really, really satisfied with what I’m doing right now. I love contributing in any way I can on the desk. But like I say, if the magic is there and it happens and it’s the perfect storm, maybe those tights will be pulled out of storage, have to make sure the moths haven’t eaten them or I may have to pay for a new pair, we’ll see. There’s always a tiny, tiny chance, but don’t hold your breath.”

Barrett played up his animosity with Drew McIntyre, stating that any return to action would likely be against him. “He’s someone I go way back with and [have been] very close with the guy over the years. He did talk a little smack to me a few weeks ago on Raw and I haven’t forgotten about that.”

Barrett later also spoke about the changes he has noticed in WWE’s creative style in recent years and other projects he has pursued outside of wrestling. You can check out the full story here.
