Tony Schiavone has offered clarification as to why he wasn’t on the broadcast team for last week’s episode of AEW Dynamite.
Schiavone, a consistent member of Dynamite’s broadcast trio, was replaced for Ian Riccaboni on the show’s January 8 episode.
This caused many to wonder if AEW had taken him off-air due to a now-deleted post he made toward NJPW commentator Chris Charlton, who found himself in hot water following comments he made during Wrestle Dynasty.
However, it seems that was not the case. Instead, Schiavone had scheduled to take the week off to support his wife Lois as she underwent hip replacement surgery.
During his appearance Wednesday on “What Happened When,” his podcast with Conrad Thompson, the duo joked about a rumored suspension.
“I don’t know if you saw, but you got suspended over a Tweet!” Thompson joked. “That’s gotta be what it is, it can’t just be that we said for weeks here that Lois was getting a new hip last week.”
Schiavone continued with his own sarcastic quip: “She got out of the hospital on Wednesday, so I just let her walk home from the hospital instead of picking her up, and I went to TV and got suspended.”
After clarifying that he was not suspended but instead at home with his wife, Schiavone mentioned that she is “moving quite well” following the surgery and is already making progress.
