It has now been four months since All Elite Wrestling debuted their weekly show titled ‘Dynamite’ on TNT. Throughout those four months, the show has featured the crowning of the first-ever AEW Women’s World Champion, World Tag Team Champions, the return to in-ring competition of Diamond Dallas Page and two AEW World Title defenses.
Dynamite has also featured the introduction of wrestlers who have yet to be spotlighted on a major stage. The likes of Darby Allin, Jungle Boy, Nyla Rose, Marko Stunt and Sonny Kiss have gained a great deal of exposure from being a part of AEW and competing on the company’s weekly program on TNT. Throughout his time in AEW thus far, Sonny Kiss has had one match on Dynamite and it was a part of the ‘Dynamite Dozen Battle Royal’ this past November. He’s competed on AEW Dark several times and competed at Fight For The Fallen and Double Or Nothing, but Sonny is prepared to be featured more prominently in AEW.
I had the opportunity to chat with Sonny at Starrcast IV in Baltimore, Maryland and he expressed that whether it’s AEW Dark or Dynamite, although there will be nerves, he’ll be ready to show what he can do because this opportunity and platform is what he’s always wanted.
“There are always gonna be nerves whether it’s AEW Dark or whether it’s just Dynamite. It’s gonna be nerves regardless. I’m gonna be ready regardless because this is what I’ve always wanted so, I’m ready.”
Sonny Kiss told POST Wrestling about his experience in AEW thus far and described it as “amazing”. All Elite Wrestling Co-Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes and Chief Brand Officer Brandi Rhodes have stated during numerous interviews that members of the AEW talent roster are allowed to be themselves on-screen. Sonny backed those sentiments and stated that every person who appears on the show is authentic and how they are presented on-screen is similar to who they are off-screen.
“Absolutely. I feel like every person that you see is authentic. They’re not altered by anybody or anything. It’s just kind of like, this is their character, this is who they are in and out of the ring and I think that’s awesome.”
Sonny Kiss has been featured in House Of Hardcore, Big Time Wrestling, Beyond Wrestling, Lucha Underground, Freelance Wrestling, Bar Wrestling and a handful of other promotions throughout his career. Most recently, two individuals have been key to Sonny’s development as an in-ring performer and those individuals are Dustin Rhodes and WWE Hall Of Famer Billy Gunn.
Sonny Kiss teamed with Dustin Rhodes on AEW Dark and had the opportunity to mix it up with Billy Gunn in the Dynamite Dozen Battle Royal. Sonny described his relationship with Gunn and Rhodes as “legit” and added that they’ve been instrumental in his career as far as being mentors.
“Him [Dustin Rhodes] and Billy [Gunn] are definitely like my mentors. They’ve been very instrumental in my career since I met them, especially Billy since maybe four years ago [when] I met him. Yeah, it’s a legit relationship. They’re definitely helping me a lot. Dustin and I on-screen, I’m not sure exactly where it’s gonna go. I’m looking forward to something really, really awesome happening.”
While he has not had a match on Dynamite in 2020, Sonny Kiss is a full-time student and is working on earning his college degree. He did make a cameo appearance on an episode of Dynamite to save Kris Statlander and Hikaru Shida from a beat down by way of The Nightmare Collective (Brandi Rhodes, Mel & Dr. Luther). As far as his goals in AEW go, Sonny wants to continue being a role model and breaking down barriers.
“The sky’s the limit. I just wanna continue to break barriers and to continue to be a role model. That’s it.”
