Prior to NXT, it was promoted that NXT General Manager William Regal had a major announcement to make and to open to the show, Regal was joined by Keith Lee to make that announcement. Lee revealed that he’ll be relinquishing the NXT North American Championship to focus solely on being NXT Champion.
With that announcement, Regal revealed that a new North American Champion will be crowned at NXT TakeOver: XXX on August 22nd which is SummerSlam weekend. A ladder match will be held to determine the new champion and on tonight’s program, Johnny Gargano, Roderick Strong and Bronson Reed will compete in a three-way match to determine the first competitor in that ladder match.

Keith Lee won the NXT Championship two weeks ago from Adam Cole. He reigned as North American Champion for seven months before relinquishing the title.
The North American Title was introduced two years ago and the first champion was Adam Cole who won the title in a ladder match at TakeOver: New Orleans during WrestleMania weekend.
