After the announcement that Roppongi 3K (SHO and YOH) were vacating the IWGP junior heavyweight tag titles, New Japan has announced a tournament.
The vacant titles will be awarded to the winner of a four-team tournament over four nights as part of the upcoming New Japan Road tour. They were vacated following YOH’s knee injury that was revealed in July.
Roppongi 3K were on their fourth reign as champion after defeating El Phantasmo & Taiji Ishimori on January 5th on the second night of Wrestle Kingdom earlier this year.
The teams will consist of Ryusuke Taguchi & Master Wato, Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI, El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru, and Taiji Ishimori & Gedo.
It’s a round-robin style tournament with two points to the winner of each match, zero to the loser, and one point to each if it’s a draw. The top two point-getters will meet in the finals.
The tournament begins on the second night of the tour on Saturday, September 5th, and will wrap with the finals on September 11th to crown the new IWGP junior heavyweight tag champions.
