Headlining today’s NJPW Sakura Genesis show at Sumo Hall was Will Ospreay challenging Kota Ibushi for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.
Ospreay earned the title match by besting Shingo Takagi in the finals of the 2021 New Japan Cup tournament. Ospreay has taken on a new persona in New Japan Pro-Wrestling that has come with a stable consisting of Great-O-Khan, Jeff Cobb, the newest member Toa Henare and formerly Bea Priestley.
The conclusion of the match between Ospreay and Ibushi saw Ospreay with his hand raised as the second IWGP World Heavyweight Champion. Ospreay is the first British wrestler to win New Japan’s Heavyweight gold.
