Brian James was unsure if the fan swinging at him was a part of the gig or not.
After wrapping up a tour with the United States Marine Corps, Brian ‘Road Dogg’ James returned to pro wrestling in 1991. Over the next several years, James would do a tour and then come back to wrestling.
In 1994, he joined the WWF/E and was paired with Jeff Jarett. At the time, James was known on-screen as ‘The Roadie’ and while recently doing a virtual signing for Highspots Wrestling Network, he recalled being ringside for a singles match between Jeff Jarrett and Scott Hall. A fan jumped the guardrail and punched James in the face twice.
Unsure of what to do, James looked over at Scott Hall and Jarrett and they instructed him to fight back which James did. Later on, James saw said fan in a hotel lobby and he appeared to be proud that he was able to be part of the show despite being hurt by Brian.
Well there’s a bunch of ‘em [crazy fan interactions] that I can’t say at all but there’s one, was not in Nova Scotia but it was in Winnipeg when I first started being The Roadie and I didn’t really know what I was doing. I just got out of the Marine Corp and wrestled a little bit but I really had no idea what I was doing and a guy jumped over the rail and just punched me in the face twice and I didn’t really know what to do about it and Jeff [Jarrett] and Razor [Scott Hall] were in the ring working and I looked up at them like, ‘What’s going on here guys? Is this part of the deal here?’ And they were both looking at me like, ‘Kill him!’ So, I beat the crap out of the guy and he came to the bar later at the hotel bleeding, he was all proud that he was a part of the show.
Brian had been with WWE for ten consecutive years. He was a part of the team in NXT and prior to that, he headed the creative team on SmackDown. James was released from WWE in January 2022.
