Charlotte discusses her father and her upcoming match with Ronda Rousey.
In several weeks, Charlotte Flair will be defending a WWE Women’s Title at WrestleMania for the third time in her career. Flair is going to put the SmackDown Women’s Title on the line against 2022 women’s Royal Rumble winner Ronda Rousey.
Ahead of WrestleMania and this week’s Friday Night SmackDown, Flair made the media rounds to promote both shows and she stopped past HOT 97 with Peter Rosenberg, Ebro and Laura Stylez. She touched on the support she receives from Ric Flair and how there are times when he can be vocal about the specifics of her career or about her co-workers.
Charlotte said she’s tried to control it, but realized she can’t. She’s aware that her father wants the best for her and he’s always going to take up for her.
I think so, yeah [it has been tasking to have her relationship with Ric Flair sometimes play out in the public eye]. But it’s also just remaining the course, where I don’t let people know what I’m thinking, whether I’m bothered or unbothered and my dad’s a lot more vocal.
I’ve tried to control that and I’ve realized that I can’t [Charlotte smiled]. So, whether my dad’s my biggest cheerleader or what — I mean, he’s gonna say what he wants to say and I can’t persuade him any other way and it’s just learning to have — it does [come from a place of love] and he thinks he’s doing right by me and I know that no one in the world would do anything other than — my dad would do anything in the world for me and how much he loves me, and my career means everything to him. So, I’m gonna try not to fight that battle anymore, so…
He’s always gonna go to bat for me and I would expect any parent to go to bat for their child. I think people just forget that it’s a father-daughter duo, and he’s just protecting his nest. Even though I don’t think I need protecting. I’m like, ‘Dad, I got this, okay?’ I’m still daddy’s little girl [Flair laughed].
Flair and Rousey’s upcoming WrestleMania match is going to be their third time sharing the ring together in a sanctioned match for WWE.
The first time was at Survivor Series 2018 and it was there that Charlotte feels she and Ronda earned one another’s respect.
I really think Survivor Series [2018], I earned her respect. We had no build, we had no story. It was a last minute thing and I think we went out there and killed it and just gave a taste of what her and I are capable of. So I’m looking forward to WrestleMania. I don’t expect anything less than what we already have delivered.
Yeah, absolutely [she earned my respect] and it’s what she did that entire year. She had — I mean she faced The Bellas, Nia Jax, myself, Alexa Bliss. She performed with many different opponents at a high level and you know, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have the best chemistry with everyone but I think she went out there and you know, she reminded me of Kurt Angle. I’m not saying — I mean, just she picked up so quickly. It’s all about instinct and she has the instinct and that’s half the battle. You can be in this business for a long time and never figure out instinct, in my opinion.
