Andrew Goldstein and fellow writers wanted to tell that story.

Opening up WWE’s 2006 Survivor Series pay-per-view was The Spirit Squad (Johnny Jeter, Ken Doane, Mike Mondo & Dolph Ziggler) taking on a legends team that consisted of Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, Ron Simmons and Sgt. Slaughter.

The in-ring history between Flair and Rhodes dates back decades ago and former WWE writer Andrew Goldstein wanted to bring that history into their Survivor Series bout.

Goldstein guest appeared on The Universal Wrestling Podcast and said he and fellow writers went to Vince McMahon at the time and asked him to bring that history up. McMahon responded by saying no one would remember Flair and Rhodes’ rivalry.

In that lead up to that Survivor Series [2006] with the legends, we were putting Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes on the same team and all of the writers were just like… ‘Vince, we have to tell this story of these are two bloodlust archenemies for 20 years. They had legendary feuds.’ He’s like, ‘God damn, nobody f*cking remembers that.’ You would have to beg to get any crunchy context.

As a part of Starrcast weekend in Nashville, Tennessee, Ric Flair is making his return to in-ring competition and it is being billed as his last match. The match card for the show is coming together and it features talents from IMPACT Wrestling, MLW, New Japan and AAA.
