Morrison asked about the idea of returning to either AEW or WWE.
After a one-year on-screen stint with WWE, John Morrison was released from the company in November 2021. He made his way back onto the independent scene and this past May, he debuted for All Elite Wrestling in the Owen Hart Foundation men’s tournament. He wrestled two more times for AEW in the weeks following.
There’s an interview with Morrison on the NBC Sports Boston YouTube page and he was asked how his AEW debut came to be. Morrison shared that he reached out to Tony Khan and they eventually set up a call.
While responding to the question of if he could be back in AEW, Morrison feels there’s a lot going on in the company and timing is everything in his mind.
So I think it came about [AEW appearances] because I — I can’t remember if I texted or called Tony [Khan] one night, and just talked to him briefly and then set up a call, we talked again and then randomly, a few days before, I think he asked me if I’d be ‘The Joker’ in the [Owen Hart Foundation] tournament and wrestle Joe and I said, ‘Yes, of course’ and I love Samoa Joe, I’m a fan of his. I remember watching him before I even started, a fan of his as a person and so, that’s how that whole thing came about and as far as what’s happening now, I feel like AEW’s got so much happening that it’s tough to introduce a new storyline. Timing is almost everything in this business and maybe the time at AEW isn’t right now. It could be, who knows? Next week. It could be in six months. It’s just what company, what times is so hard to explain to people.
In the past month, Dakota Kai, Karrion Kross, Dexter Lumis, Hit Row (Top Dolla, B-FAB & Ashante ‘Thee’ Adonis) and Johnny Gargano returned to WWE.
Morrison states that with the shift in WWE, there’s going to be a lot of opportunity for free agent talents. He thinks those who went back made the right move for them. Even with that aforementioned shift, Morrison does not know what that means for him.
You know, I will not run off before September 3rd [Morrison jokingly said about the idea of returning to WWE before his match at The Wrestling Showcase]. But, you’re right, there’s a crazy shift going on right now in the wrestling world and I don’t know exactly what that means for me. But for pro wrestlers out there like me who are unsigned, it means opportunity and where? I don’t know, and when? I also don’t know and I think sometimes — like with [Karrion] Kross and Dexter Lumis, like seeing him too. The time was right and I think they made the right move and sometimes it’s better to wait and sometimes it’s better to go to the other place. It just depends on who you are and what your style is and I’m figuring all that out. I think that’s what most wrestlers do. You spend your career trying to figure things out and you need to.
He wrapped up a tour of Australia in early July. Coming out of that tour, both GCW and IWC (International Wrestling Cartel) tweeted out that Morrison was dealing with an injury. Morrison has not competed since that tour.
