Tony Khan wanted to go the interim route instead of taking the title from Rosa.
This Sunday at AEW All Out, Britt Baker, Jamie Hayter, Hikaru Shida and Toni Storm are going to compete in a four-way to determine an interim AEW Women’s World Champion.
The current champion Thunder Rosa is sidelined with an injury. She was originally supposed to defend the belt at All Out against Toni Storm. To promote the week of events for AEW, company President Tony Khan returned to Busted Open Radio. When asked about Rosa, Khan said she offered to relinquish the title but like he told CM Punk, he wanted her to still be recognized as champion and opted to go the interim route.
I have told her [Thunder Rosa] just as I mentioned to CM Punk when he was injured that, ‘I would like for you to remain the champion. Get healthy, come back’ and we’ll have a big unification match to crown an undisputed champion when Thunder Rosa returns. Both of them offered to relinquish the title and I told each of them, separately, when they came back from their injuries, they would still be recognized as the champion but by the time they came back, there would be an interim champion which would set up an exciting situation. Obviously, we’re living that situation right now with Punk and Mox. So when Thunder Rosa comes back, she’ll have a great interim champion to fight and we’ll find out Sunday who the interim champion is.
