Dream Slam Weekly (Vol. 23) Yuki Mashiro Announces Retirement

Ice Ribbon's Yuki Mashiro announces her retirement from both professional wrestling and idol activities.

Tiny Elephants in the Room

Ian “The Hurricane” Elephant

As a thirty year Floridian transplant, it’s been several years since we’ve had a massive hurricane. I genuinely feel like the last big one we had that resulted in a week’s worth of closure was back in 2019, when Hurricane Dorian shut down everything just in time for my birthday. Since last week’s Dream Slam Weekly— as you might have guessed by now — I am very much not in London, England for Royal Quest 2. No sooner did the sun rise last Saturday, I started preparing for the worst and hoping for the best, which in Floridian means stocking up on hurricane supplies while also optimistically packing a suitcase.

As a state employee, once we started receiving the daily hurricane reports with action plan and potential closures, I simply stopped preparing to fly, and instead, prepared to stay. By Tuesday afternoon, I received the official airport closure notification and flight cancelation e-mail, which was actually rather relieving. However, I’m not the least bit upset that I am not partying it up in London, whilst a hurricane passed over my home. Zelda (my dog) and I passed the hurricane quietly and safely. For which, I am exceptionally grateful.

Thursday, after the storm passed, we lost power and cellular reception for several hours during the day. A little bit of panic when a single photo of flooded streets by my parents’ house came through with no context, and about five hour window where neither my sister nor I couldn’t get in contact with my parents, but thankfully, they were safe. Just the power and communications lines in their area were all out. We were fortunate compared to many other regions of Florida and the Caribbean Islands, where countless lives were lost and catastrophic damage occurred.

I just wanted to thank everyone who checked-in on me and my family during this time. Thank you for helping me weather the storm.

Which takes us to the other tiny elephant…

DISCLOSURE: Karen Peterson is currently working with Bushiroad (parent company of New Japan and STARDOM) on a limited basis on a series of articles on the history of Stardom leading into the Historic X-Over event in November that will appear on their website.

The Historic X-Column Elephant

Earlier this week, a limited guest column launched on New Japan’s English Website: Karen Peterson’s Historic X-Column. Yes, the aforementioned Karen Peterson is me. I know I have a rather common name, but we are one and the same. (^-^)v Over the next month and a half, I will have a multi-part guest column helping bright a brighter spotlight to STARDOM. For those who have spent the last year with me and my STARDOM coverage, you know how passionate I am about their product and how much I want them to succeed.

The series is designed as a primer to help those unfamiliar with STARDOM have some access to information about the product in English as the STARDOM website is entirely in Japanese and accessible resources for the more casual fan are not as easily located. The intent is to make Japanese wrestling for those who cannot speak the language or do not know where to start. Much like my event reports and this column, that’s one of my primary objectives. The above disclaimer will be included on all of my STARDOM and New Japan coverage in the next two months, including here at Dream Slam Weekly.

My event reviews will not be altered or edited because I am working on this project. I will continue to do to bring forward fair assessments of their products. I believe that transparency is essential, so I worked with John Pollock to find the best solution to provide everyone with as clear a statement as possible. Thank you for your understanding and continued support

Genuinely some of the hardest working freelancers on the Joshi scene. While COLOR’S got their start in ActWres Girl’Z, they are blazing their own trail on the independent scene and partnering with bigger promotions. Their affiliation with Cosmic Angels’ in Stardom has helped put them on casual fans’ radar, but they are quickly taking over by working together but also striking out on their own at various promotions.Yes My Way V4 Main EventNext Big Event: Yes, My Way (Vol. 4) (10/7) ShinKiba 1st Ring

Ice Ribbon

Yuki Mashiro formally announced that she will retire from professional wrestling and idol activities at Ribbon Mania on December 31st of this year.

“I will turn 21 this year and there are many things I would like to do. I want to leap out into the world I don’t know, and have new experiences. I feel I so much left to learn. I believe I’ve been able to grow as a person because of pro-wrestling. I will do everything at can with all my of might with my remaining three months. I hope everyone will continue to watch over Yuki Mashiro, the wrestler. I decided a while back that I would give myself three years. I have an interest in the field of medicine, so I would like to see if I can pursue a career related to that field.”

Homework: Weekly Match Selection

As I was finishing up this week’s volume, I saw that Antonio Inoki passed away. While my scope of knowledge with regard to Inoki’s career is shallow, after this last week, it just made me really sad. I needed something out of the box and wacky. I remembered that I had dogeared this match featuring the Magical Sugar Rabbits (Yuka Sakazaki and Mizuki) against loveable, troublemaker mascot, Pokotan and Demonio Uno when it aired.

I hadn’t had a chance to watch it, until tonight. While the video here is a small glimpse, it still makes me smile.

https://youtu.be/pQ7RSuTOIs8

I hope more people make time to watch wrestling that matters to them, and makes them feel happy. Lately, the world needs more of that. If you can watch the full match or let me know what match you’ve seen lately that really cheered you up, resonated, or just made you feel something deep inside.

Full match available on WRESTLE UNIVERSE. Subscription required.

  • Promotion: TJPW
  • Event: TJPW Inspiration
  • Venue: Shinjuku FACE
  • Date: September 11, 2022
  • Result: Yuka Sakazaki & Mizuki defeat Pokotan and Demonio Uno (12:28)

I know this isn’t the usual weekly match selection, but with all the talks about Japan opening back up to international tourism, it’s just a shame that we missed out on so much fun over the summer time! This is just another reason I start saving up for next summer!
