Brett DiBiase recaps his run-in at SummerSlam 2009.
While Brett DiBiase was still in WWE’s then-developmental system, Florida Championship Wrestling, he was brought up to the main roster to be part of John Cena and Randy Orton’s WWE Championship match at SummerSlam 2009.
DiBiase reflected on that experience while on the ‘Developmentally Speaking’ show. He remembered being contacted by John Laurinaitis, who told him that if he told anybody about the appearance, he’d be fired. Brett recalls being brought into a room with The Undertaker, Cena, Arn Anderson, Jim Ross and Vince McMahon.
When he got into the room, he said hello and no one responded. Cena later came up to him and said he was glad Brett is a part of his match, but if he messed up, he’ll never work for WWE again. Brett’s brother, Ted DiBiase Jr., was also not aware Brett was going to be there. Brett added that there were wrestlers on standby ready to go after him because they thought he was a fan who got involved in Cena and Orton’s match.
So, I will never forget, I was not expecting it (to be part of Randy Orton vs. John Cena at SummerSlam 2009). I got a call from Johnny Ace and this is what sucked about it was it was wonderful but it was like, ‘Hey Brett. This is Johnny.’ He’s like, ‘Look, so here’s the deal, you’re gonna be part of John Cena versus Randy Orton’s match at SummerSlam’ and I’m like, ‘… Okay.’ He’s like, ‘But here’s the deal, you can’t tell a soul. If you tell anybody, you’re fired.’ I’m like, well sh*t. I’m about to be in John Cena and Randy Orton’s match and I can’t tell nobody? Not even my dad? Come on and so, I’m like, ‘Okay.’ He’s like, ‘We’re gonna fly you in. We’re putting you up in a separate hotel completely away from all the boys’ so I’m like, ‘Alright.’ So he goes, ‘See you at the show.’ So I get my itinerary, fly, limo picks me up, takes me to the hotel. My first big moment, right? And I’m in a freaking hotel by myself and I didn’t even get to hang out. I’m getting room service because I was told not to leave my room, I can’t go anywhere and I’m stuck in my head going what the hell am I gonna do? So Ty (Bailey), limo shows up next day, they put me in the limo, we’re going to the building and they start covering me up with a black sheet and I’m like, Jesus… Am I about to win or something? This is crazy, and they take me, put me on a golf cart and here’s where the story gets fun. I got all my luggage, right? I’m terrified already because I mean, I don’t know what to do, I feel like I’m not really organized. They put me on this thing, they go through the hallway. How the son b*tch can see? I don’t know, driving with a black sheet over us and they get me in this little room and they go to the door and Ty says, ‘Hey, just stand in here.’ So he opens the door and in this little, bitty room, you got Vince McMahon, John Cena, Undertaker, J.R., Arn Anderson and I wanna say, maybe, I can’t remember, only one or two more and I walk in, I’ve got all my bags and I’m like, great. I get up against the wall and I’m like, ‘Hey guys. How y’all doing?’ They all looked at me. Not one person said hello back and I’m like, alright, okay. So then I’m just standing there and then Cena gets up after he’s done talking, he walks by and I’ll never forget, he taps me on the shoulder, he goes, ‘Hey kid, congratulations.’ He said, ‘Hey man, I’m so glad you’re gonna get to be a part of my match tonight.’ He said, ‘Don’t f*ck this up or you’ll never work for the company again. Good luck’ and walked out, and I’m like, okay. So then… You gotta understand, Arn and my dad were real close. Arn knew me as a baby. He gave me this name ‘butt kiss’ for some reason. I don’t even really remember why but that’s what Arn called me. He’s like, ‘Hey, butt kiss, come on out here. I’m gonna tell you what you’re doing.’ He said, ‘So here’s the deal, John’s gonna put Randy in a submission. When Randy almost gets to the rope, when Cena lets go and pulls him back, whenever he starts pulling back, that’s when you jump the rail and you come in and jump on Scott’ and he said, ‘That’s all you’re gonna do’ and walked away and I’m like, because you know, I’m thinking can you just tell me one more time maybe? Just once, make sure I got it, right? Told me one time, I’m in street clothes. So, crazier part of the story, this is real life now. I’m out there. They take me, plant me ringside. So that night, I don’t know if y’all remember, Teddy (DiBiase Jr.) and Cody (Rhodes) were wrestling Shawn (Michaels) and Hunter in the match before Cena and Randy so Teddy doesn’t know I’m here and of all things, they’re on the side I’m sitting on and Hunter throws Teddy into the barricade, he comes over and lands right between my legs… He starts coming up and he looks up and he’s like, ‘What the hell are you doing?’ I said, ‘Don’t look at me! Don’t look at me!…’ I’m probably being way more obvious, and then he’s back in the match probably the whole (time) going, what is my brother — I’m confused. So finally Cena comes out. I’ll never forget, Cena gets in the ring, he’s in the corner and he’s got his arms like this (stretched out) and he looks at me and all he did, he just gives me a head nod and my heart’s (pumping). That was a big one, that was in Vegas and so then Orton comes out, we do the deal and I remember I hit the ring, jumped on Scott (Armstrong). Scott was like, ‘Man, you’re the lightest dude I ever worked!’ He’s like, ‘DiBiase, man, it looked so real’ and he’s like, ‘I wanna wrestle that son of b*tch live on TV’ and so they pulled me out, take me to the back and of course when I get to the back, I remember R-Truth was one of them, there was a couple guys standing there ready to just whip me… And of course Johnny’s just like, ‘Wait! Wait! Wait! It’s just Brett! It’s just Brett, it’s just DiBiase.’ I’m like, oh my God and dude, that was a shoot. When they got me, they hooked both my hands and grabbed my ankles… I remember my head going ‘boom!’ And hitting off the mat. I was like, geez, lighten up, right? It’s a work. But I had to be a fan and so, the only way — I started getting text messages from some of my buddies and the guys back in Florida. They’re like, ‘You know, the only way we knew it was you was those damn ostrich-skin cowboy boots’ and that’s how they knew and they did. They were like, ‘That’s Brett. That’s Brett for sure’ because of the boots and then the next night was on Monday Night Raw and then I went back down to do those few hours of TV with Joe and that’s when I blew the first knee out and they were gonna call me up. There was some deal one time where they were gonna maybe put me with Shawn and Hunter… Wish that would have happened for sure, you know? Because I was gonna get superkicked one night by Shawn in the hallway and I was like, man, I will eat that foot with — sign me up because Shawn was one of my — as far as worker-wise and my style and my size, I really like Shawn’s work. I actually got close to Shawn and Shawn kinda became a redneck overnight. It’s kind of weird, you know? And he started wearing camouflage and bought all this land to hunt and we would always text about deer hunting and stuff like that so, and then it all kind of came crashing down on me after that.
DiBiase plead guilty to one charge related to the Mississippi welfare scandal and to read more on that, check out POST Wrestling’s coverage of it.
