** While Beer City Bruiser was a guest on The Undisputed Podcast w/ Bobby Fish, he spoke about his friendship with the late Jamin Pugh a.k.a. Jay Briscoe. Bruiser and his family drove eight hours so they could make it to Pugh’s funeral service.
Bruiser: When he passed, I told my wife, ‘No matter what it cost, we’re getting to that funeral. We gotta be there for Chicken and Ashley and the kids,’ because Jamin would do that for us, you know what I mean? And we did… It was eight hours away. We drove the full eight hours and attended it and you know, but like you said, that’s the type of guy he was.
That note led to Bruiser sharing a story about Jay Briscoe and Bobby Fish. When they were in Ring of Honor, the company sent out an email of banned words that could not be said on television. This rule was put in place because of the amount of profanity that Fish and Jay used while in a tag team match. Talents would be fined if they used any of the words. After Fish exited ROH, an updated email was sent out to inform talents that the banned list is still in effect, but The Briscoes would be under a strike rule before being penalized.
Bruiser: Bobby (Fish), towards the end of your run in Ring of Honor, remember they sent out that email to everybody about the words we couldn’t say on TV? It was you and Kyle (O’Reilly) against The Briscoes on TV and you guys, between you and Jamin I think had swore about 40-something times… So it got to the point where the whole company, the whole company got an email about what words we can’t say and we can thank Bobby Fish and Jamin Pugh (he laughed). We’d get fined if we said those words because these two are just beating the sh*t out of each other, dropping ‘F’ bombs and ‘S’ bombs.
Fish: It wasn’t in a promo or anything.
Bruiser: It was (in the) ring.
Fish: If Jamin hit me, I was like, ‘F*cking –’ I’d come back on him and he’d be like, ‘You motherf*cker.’
Bruiser: It’s a very heavily edited match and it’s not edited because of the violence. It’s edited because they had to beep out Bobby and Jamin every time they do something… Because they made an admin to that where, ‘Okay, now that Bobby’s moved on to different things, everybody else can’t say these words but The Briscoe Brothers get X amount of strikes before they get fined.’
** Looking back at his run in IMPACT Wrestling, Sami Callihan named his match with Pentagón Jr. from Slammiversary 2018 and his World Title win over Brian Cage as his standout moments during this run. He listed those moments while appearing on Sunday Night’s Main Event.
I don’t think I’ve had it yet (the standout moment in IMPACT Wrestling). I think I’m not a complacent person. I think I’m gonna have a better moment, a better moment, a better moment but if I have to pick one, I’d have to say me and Pentagón’s match of the year from Slammiversary a couple of years ago. I’d have to say myself winning the IMPACT World Heavyweight Championship against Brian Cage in a cage on the first episode of IMPACT on AXS TV.
** Joining Bobby Fish on The Undisputed Podcast was Tyler Breeze. As their conversation rolled on, Breeze shared that he was at Ring of Honor Supercard of Honor 2023 and saw Dante Martin’s foot/ankle injury. Breeze hopes Martin comes back to the ring and does not take similar risks. He added that it hurt him to see Martin go down with that injury.
It’s hard not to sound like one of the old timers. I was at one of the ROH tapings and they had some crazy match and this dude (Dante Martin) did, I think, a Canadian Destroyer through two tables and exploded his leg in half… And I’m watching this and I went, ‘Oh! This poor kid man.’ You’re having this match and you do not — and again, it’s not phoning it in, it’s not being complacent. You don’t need to do that because there’s such a freakin’ room for error and now this kid is young and he just exploded his leg and now when you come back, are you gonna do the same type of stuff? Or are you kind of that age-old tradition that you only get good when you get injured? Because then you can’t do all this stuff and now you rely on other stuff like your personality or making the simple stuff very interesting as opposed to relying on the fireworks, you know what I mean? I really hope when he comes back, I really hope he doesn’t take those risks again. Just do what you need to but man, that was a nasty injury to watch and it just makes me feel bad… What a crazy stunt. What a crazy stunt… (Even if things went smoothly), it just blends in and the next day, nobody remembers it. I remember it because he exploded his leg in half. That’s why I remember it. It’s like, damn dude.
Circling around to when Breeze and Dirty Dango made their returns to NXT, they had the idea in mind to present themselves in a more serious manner. It was Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque who told them to keep having fun with their on-screen characters.
We did all that stuff on Raw and SmackDown and then when me and (Dirty) Dango came back to NXT, Triple H was very adamant because we were almost like, alright, we wanna be these straight-forward ass kickers, whatever, blah, blah, blah and Hunter was like, ‘Nah man.’ He goes, ‘Don’t forget why the people love you guys. It’s because of the fun’ and it’s like, now we’ll just give them the other part of it as well but we’re not losing the fun part. ‘That’s why they’re attached to you’ and we’re like, ‘Oh, good point.’ Anyone can be the badass, you know what I mean? But, putting yourself out there to, again, maybe make people laugh or maybe they go, man, these guys suck. It’s tough. Tough spot.
