Promo Parade

SmackDown from Toronto kicked off with Jey Uso coming down to the ring and talking about Money in the Bank tomorrow night when he was swiftly interrupted by LA Knight. Knight said it was a year ago when he was the frontrunner going into the Money in the Bank match and that all of Toronto would be saying “Yeah” instead of “Yeet” tomorrow night. The pair then traded off yeahs and yeets when they were interrupted by Carmelo Hayes. Hayes barely got to the ring when Chad Gable then interrupted him. Gable said he’s been going through hell these last few weeks. Before Gable could continue, he was interrupted by Andrade who was in turn interrupted by Drew McIntyre.

McIntyre said CM Punk wasn’t there tonight but his family was always with him as he held up the infamous bracelet. McIntyre then addressed each of his opponents individually until a melee broke out with all six competitors attacking each other, ending with Drew McIntyre being double-teamed by LA Knight and Jey Uso who were the two left standing.

Bayley & Chelsea

Backstage, Jackie Redmond asked Bayley what it takes to not only win the Money in the Bank Ladder Match but then successfully cash in. Chelsea Green interrupted saying that Bayley wouldn’t even be champion if she wasn’t “illegally” ejected from the match with Piper Niven. Niven then jumped Bayley. Green said that the next time Piper attacks her, she’ll be cashing in her Money in the Bank contract to become champion. After the commercial break, Bayley was seen coming out of Nick Aldis’ office when she ran into Naomi. Bayley said she requested a match against Piper Niven tonight and left to get ready. Naomi seemed to shake her head in disapproval after Bayley left.

Pretty Deadly vs. Street Profits

The first match of the evening was Pretty Deadly taking on The Street Profits. The announce team said this match was to “move up the rankings” in the tag division as both teams hoped to get a Tag Team Championship match sometime soon. The two teams warred back and forth with the Profits getting a big near fall after a swanton from Angelo Dawkins. Montez Ford picked up the win after a big Frosh Splash from the top rope.

A-Town Down Under

Backstage, Grayson Waller was amping himself up for their title match later tonight whereas Austin Theory was questioning whether or not they were on the same page. Theory said he was still thinking about what Johnny Gargano said but Waller brushed it off and convinced him that their opponents weren’t on the same level as them.

Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell vs. Jade Cargill & Bianca Belair

Next up was Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair taking on Candice LeRae and Indi Hartwell. The announcers tried to play up that Hartwell and LeRae had been a tag team much longer than Cargill & Belair but who was coming out on top of this match was pretty telegraphed.

The face team hit simultaneously Jaded and KODs with Jade picking up the pin on LeRae. Cathy Kelley interviewed the team after the win and they said that Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn were just keeping “their” tag team titles warm and they would see them soon.

Cody Rhodes, Kevin Owens & Randy Orton

The faces all came out individually which took up at least five minutes if not more. Once they were all finally in the ring, Cody Rhodes said they had heard enough from Solo Sikoa and this “modern” Bloodline. Randy Orton added that their fight tomorrow night would end with an RKO. Kevin Owens said that four days ago his Mom got rushed to the hospital and he’s been there all week with her watching her “fight like hell”. Owens added that he knows he could have stayed home tonight but he didn’t because his Mother would be pissed and said that they would “beat The Bloodlines’ asses worse than ever before.”

Bayley vs. Piper Niven

Next on the card was Bayley taking on Piper Niven which was set up earlier in the evening. Before the match, IYO Sky was shown in the crowd watching on with her arms crossed. Bayley was accompanied to the ring by Naomi so she had a counter to Chelsea Green in Niven’s corner. After an ad break, Tiffany Stratton, Zoe Stark, and Lyra Valkyria all appeared at ringside. Naomi and Chelsea Green began fighting on the outside leading to all the other Money in the Bank competitors brawling at ringside.

This distracted Bayley but she avoided a Niven splash and hit the Rose Plant for the win. Before Bayley could celebrate the victory, she was jumped by Nia Jax until Michin made the save, hitting Jax with a kendo stick.

WWE Tag Team Championship

The main event of the evening featured DIY challenging A-Town Down Under for the WWE Tag Team titles. Before the match, DIY did a walking promo talking about how eight years ago in this very building they won the NXT Tag Titles and they were going to win the WWE tag titles tonight. Early in the match, Gargano hit what Corey Graves described as a “Cleveland Destroyer” where it looked like Grayson Waller landed awkwardly.

Thankfully Waller seemed to be okay as he recovered and pulled Ciampa off the apron preventing the Gargano tag. Later on, a miscommunication led to Grayson Waller accidentally punching Austin Theory leading to a nearfall. DIY then executed a Shatter Machine (clearly a nod to their opponents eight years ago) which led to another nearfall.

Then the action became fast and furious with Ciampa hitting Project Ciama followed by Meet Me in the Middle but Austin Theory was able to get Waller’s foot onto the bottom rope to break the count. The action continued as Gargano got Waller into the Gargano Escape and Theory stopped Waller from tapping out at the last second. Ciampa then got Theory into the Sicilian Stretch as the heels both tapped out simultaneously – again referencing their prior Toronto match with The Revival. With that, we have new WWE Tag Team Champions in #DIY.

Solo Sikoa Calls Out Roman Reigns

After promoting all night that Sikoa would address the WWE Universe, all it was was a two minute promo package with Sikoa saying that Roman Reigns was “not man enough to defend our legacy at Wrestlemania” and therefore he is now the Tribal Chief. Solo said he is coming for Cody Rhodes and he will take the WWE Championship. He went on to say that if Roman Reigns wants that title back, he can try to take it from him.

Announced for Smackdown Next Week from Worcester, MA:

  • Michin vs. Nia Jax
  • Baron Corbin & Apollo Crews vs. Angel and Berto

Final Thoughts

Overall a mostly inconsequential show with the major exception being the main event WWE Tag Title match between DIY and A-Town Down Under. They did a great job connecting the dots between DIY’s NXT tag title win over The Revival eight years ago and then doubled down by having multiple in-match references including a Shatter Machine. Also of note was Solo Sikoa calling out Roman Reigns directly in the show-ending promo package.
