Goldberg further speaks about the conversations he had with AEW’s Tony Khan.
Joining Chris Van Vliet for a new recording of the Insight podcast was Bill Goldberg. As their conversation moved along, he further spoke about the conversations he had with AEW President Tony Khan.
He commented on why their talks did not progress and added that he does not feel they were close to reaching an agreement. Goldberg wanted to be involved with Sting’s road to retirement. He went on to state that Khan reminds him of a ‘male Dixie Carter.’
I just think we (Goldberg & Tony Khan) have a different perspective on it, I think. I don’t know. I mean, it’s hard for me to really pass judgment on their production because I don’t watch it. I see clips of it, and it’s hard to give a rational breakdown of how they are if I don’t really watch it, so, I don’t really know. He reminds me of Dixie Carter. But a male version, and I don’t know if it’s a good or a bad thing. But he reminds me of that scenario and it’s just a different feel… It’s just different.
No. I don’t think I was ever close to making a deal with him. I think it was much more a realistic transition when Sting was involved. I reached out to Sting because I wanted to be a part. I thought he and I could do a farewell thing at some point together but, it wasn’t about me. It was about Sting… I could never overshadow anything that he does. But I don’t want to convolute the water. It would have been a nice crescendo but, it wasn’t about me. So the timing was kind of off on that.
As of this writing, Goldberg’s last match took place in 2022 at the Elimination Chamber Premium Live Event in Saudi Arabia. He fell in defeat to Roman Reigns in six minutes in a Universal Title match.
Goldberg said if he wanted to have one more match, he could make it happen himself. He then brought up that Vince McMahon told him he could get another match in WWE. He reiterated that he’s not pleased that the match with Reigns is his last.
Well no (the second match with Roman Reigns is not on the table), not from Vince (McMahon). No. If that match was still on the table, it would have been done, I think. I would have thought. But, hey man, I was thinking about it this morning in the shower, right? Man, I had one of the best wrestling careers ever and don’t think for one second that I don’t understand that and I don’t appreciate it and so to sit here and cry over a person not keeping his word in a business that’s as cutthroat as humanly possible and he gets cast out, what do I think is gonna happen, right? And so come on man. I mean, I’m a big boy. It is what it is. If I really wanted that to happen, I could go do it myself. I could go to India and do it, I could go to Israel and do it, I could go (to) Japan and do it, I could do it here in the States. The fact is though, the past six years, I’ve poured every ounce of my soul into my son, and I haven’t even used this weight room barely. But now, he’s out the door, I got to fill my time with a bunch of stuff so I’m working on my cars and I’m training again. I’m going to get stem cells, bio accelerator down in Columbia. I’ve got this new TV show going, I’m going to Roadkill Nights in Detroit, August the 10th. I’m actually living again.
No, it sucks (that the match with Roman Reigns is my last as of now). I had f*cking COVID three weeks before I was asked to do it. It was horrible. No, it was a favor. You know, it was my job. I’m not gonna say no, I’ve never said no, really, and I was asked to wrestle twice a year… Yeah (I’m talking about the matches in Saudi Arabia). They were caught between a rock and a hard place and I was their answer, right? And I feel like I did him a favor and that’s why I thought that the favor would be reciprocated. But, it is what it is, it is what it is. I’ll never forget the phone call I got when I was in bed and man, I couldn’t even breathe. I felt like ass, I couldn’t even get up. ‘Think you can make Saudi in three weeks?’ ‘Sure. I’ll be there. You promise me a match after that?’ ‘Sure!’ Yeah, I should’ve known better. That’s my fault.
